WELCOME TO CAECUS TOWN
LOCAL INFORMATION
Local Pokémon: Starly Flabébé Mime Jr. Snubble Cleffa
With flower boxes lining every street, polished white stone buildings towering in the air and dozens of Flabébé floating gently through the breeze, Caecus is a fairy-type lover's paradise, filled with Pokémon who have grown extremely used to human contact. Feral Snubbull are often simply adopted from off the streets, while Mime Jr.s and Cleffas collect the scraps fallen from the opulent outdoor dining tables of overpriced cafes. Caecus' official bird is Starly.
Both larger and more heavily populated than its sister-town of Campana, Caecus is just on the verge of being deemed a true city, complete with the corruption and greed to go with the title. Researchers will feel right at home with the local focus on TMs, performance-enhancing drugs, and less than legal training techniques, while trainers themselves may be interested in the recently installed Fairy-type gym, which boasts both its challenge and high fashion. Driving their prosperity through transport, clothing manufacturing, and a black market linked directly to Piscari, Caecus is a home-away-from-home for those less than inclined to follow the word of the law. Its original population is largely light-skinned, with a mix of French and British dialects.

By now, Valrún knew enough of the town to be able to wander out and explore and make it back to Aure's bakery with little trouble. Finding Matilda's flower shop by Aure's instructions had been a challenge, but one he took to well. The sun was out, but not enough to make him willing to venture out with only his hoodie. He'd opted again to use the oversized fluffy pink coat Aure lended him before. After the green guy had made fun of him in it the day before, one would think the boy would have opted for something different. But perhaps because of the interaction, Val was determined to wear it.

It wasn't like there was anything wrong with it. The coat was warm, blocked out the wind, and he liked the way the sleeves could completely cover his hands when he wasn't trying to hold onto stuff. And maybe he just felt defensive of it.

It was actually Lela that found the shop first. At his side, she'd straightened to attention and barked before bouncing up to the purrloin waiting outside the shop as if he'd been expecting them. The puppy rubbed against the feline with affection, recalling his nature had been far more gentle than that of the one called Scratch. With Lela being so friendly with it, Valrún actually knelt down to stroke the cat's back if he'd allow it before heading inside.

The smells were the first to grab his attention and the boy just had to stop and inhale. Gently, the boy reached out to touch the petals of a few flowers arranged in pretty vases before calling out. "Hello?"

Sacred Purrloin Egg: 2/20

Phlox sat in contented somnolence on the sidewalk outside the shop. It was still chill for this time of year, but winter finally seemed to be easing its grip a hair and the Purrloin gratefully soaked up the sunlight. At the sound of a sudden excited bark he opened one eye halfway to see the animated form of the Growlithe pup. Phlox was more than willing to allow the canine’s affection, giving her a quick lick on the top of her head as she cuddled up to him. When the boy that accompanied Lela leaned down to stroke him, Phlox went to the effort to stand, pressing his back into the touch with a trilling little ”Prrrr?” of greeting. Til would certainly be happy to see the boy.

Before Pholx could flop over and give Val his belly to pet, the boy stood and went into the shop. Phlox fluffed his whiskers forward as he gave a pouty little huff before trailing the two new arrivals into Purrfect Posies.

As Val entered the shop, a prim-looking Skitty gave them a polite nod from her spot on the corner of a work table in the back of the room, while a Glameow on a perch near the front windows glanced at them and turned away. The Skitty sniffed at the haughty Glameow indignantly, then looked down to make eye contact with the Growlithe pup. ”Welcome to Purrfect Posies. If you’ll give me just a moment, I’ll fetch Matilda and she’ll be happy to help you.” With that, she hopped down with tremendous aplomb and pranced briskly into the back.

A moment later, the cracked door through which she had slipped opened to reveal the Skitty and Matilda, smiling brightly. One arm was gently holding the warmed sheepskin pouch that cradled the egg she was tending. Val! And Lela! I’m so glad to see you both!” Til set the egg carefully on the work table as she passed, then leaned down to give the little Growlithe a scratch behind the ears before wrapping Val in a warm hug.

She pulled back but left her hands resting on the boy’s shoulders, buried in the thick plush of Aureliusz’s winter coat. ”Can I get you something? Tea, cocoa? Something to eat?” She raised one hand to brush hair grown just a little long out of his face. Despite his return to health (with the rapid speed belonging only to children and Pokemon), Til still fretted that the boy needed strengthening. He needed feeding and care and somewhere safe to grow, and he’d have every bit of it if she and Aure had anything to say about it.

Valrún had spent most of his 'pokemon time' around dogs, but that didn't mean he was clueless about cats. The delighted purring brought a smile. Sometimes, it sounded so much like they were talking. Upon entering the shop, the boy hadn't even seen the skitty until Lela trotted right on over and wagged her tail at it. The glameow's movement had been seen out of the corner of his eye, but since it seemed to have no interest in him, he didn't walk over to try to make friends. Still selective with the pokemon he even greeted in the first place, he saw no reason to force himself on one that clearly didn't want anything to do with him.

'Okay, thanks!' Lela responded to the skitty, expression bright. The more cats she met, the better an impression she got of them each time.

As Matilda walked in, her voice a ray of sun, the boy pulled back quickly from the flowers he'd been petting, a bit embarrassed about being caught. Lela accepted the scratches under her chin with delight, lifting her head and turning so the woman could get to just the right spot. Maybe others would be offended the dog got affection first, but Valrún only smiled timidly as he accepted her warm hug.

She smelled nice. Like the flowers. And sun. Was that even possible? Whatever it was, he liked it.

"Me, too," he said quietly. When she offered him food and drink, the boy lifted his hands. "Oh, no, no. I actually came to thank you, and ask if you needed any help." He shrugged a little. "It's the least I can do after what you and Aure did for me."

Sacred Purrloin Egg (Incubator): 4/20

This boy made her heart warm, and that warmth couldn’t help but show itself in a smile and melting dark eyes. ”That’s so sweet, chere! You must know you don’t owe us a thing, though. It was our absolute pleasure.” She squeezed his shoulders lightly to emphasize her words.

Still, she recognized that he was old enough to have a bit of pride, and being able to do something for them in return would probably mean something to him. She tapped one finger against her chin, a little ”Hmmm” escaping her as she looked thoughtful for a moment. Her eyes suddenly alight, she snapped her fingers sharply. ”I have some deliveries to make today, and I could use some help! Would you like to come with me? I was actually just in the back gathering the arrangements that need to be taken out.”

Sure enough, sitting in the back room was a small wagon holding some half-dozen arrangements, Matilda’s preferred method of delivery being on foot as long as she didn’t have so many her shop van was necessary.

Awaiting the boy’s answer, she moved over to the work table and carefully slid the creamy egg from its warm pouch, transferring it to a small incubator. It would need the extra warmth the device provided if they were heading out into the chilly day.

Of all the people who could have found him that rainy day, Matilda and Aureliusz were by far the most giving, kind individuals. How lucky he was to know - and love - them. Valrún certainly hadn't learned of love from the love his father kept from him; it was something innate within the youth and something he longed to give to others. Finally, he had people trustworthy enough to be gentle with his heart.

Tilly was animated as she pondered how he could help. When she thought of her deliveries, the boy smiled. "Of course!" It was just the sort of thing he was hoping he could help her with. Since he didn't know the town very well yet, it was good he could accompany her to help and learn the lay of the land at the same time.

While they made a game plan, Lela entertained herself by rubbing against Phlox. As she'd learned in the plains, the puppy warmed her fur a little to provide the feline with the added experiencing of a personal heater at his beck and call. The growlithe tried to mimic his purring, her growling-whimpers lacking the trill she was hoping for while her bum wiggled from the force of her tail wagging.

Sacred Purrloin Egg (Incubator): 6/20

Phlox’s eyes slid half shut in pleasure at the unexpected warmth emanating from the little Growlithe. He gladly returned the affectionate rubbing and purred loudly, flopping to one side and batting the pup playfully with one paw, claws sheathed. Rolling about, the Purrloin nearly flopped into the Skitty still standing by Til. Marigold looked distinctly offended and retreated back to the work table to stay clear of the play.

Matilda clapped her hands together in delight at Val’s response. ”Excellent! Would you mind locking the front door and turning the sign? We’ll go out the back.” Til turned a smiling face down to the Pokemon frolicking near their feet. ”Are you all coming, hmm?” Phlox looked up and gave a happy trill, while Marigold offered a sweet little “don’t forget about me” meow from her corner of the table. ”Come on, what about you, Hyacinth? You could use the fresh air.” The Glameow lifted her chin haughtily and looked away with a little sniff. Til rolled her eyes. ”Fine; your loss!”

When the boy and his pup were ready, Til snagged the egg, safe in its incubator, and headed into the back room where the wagon of flowers, painted a cheerful sunshine-yellow with “Purrfect Posies” on the side, waited. The florist tucked the incubator in between two arrangements and pointed sternly at Phlox. ”You walk, lazybones, at least until the wagon is half empty. You hear me?” The violet feline sighed heavily, but nodded.

Til took a moment to slip both cats into harnesses with matching leashes--Marigold’s white with pink roses adorning it, Phlox’s resembling a little bomber jacket with matching brown leash with sheepskin lining the handle--before gesturing toward a door and looking at Val. ”Do you mind taking the wagon, doudou? I’ll lock up behind us.”

As the feline rolled over in play, Lela gave a soft yip of pleasure, excited to have a willing playmate. The pup moved her head away from the swipe of a paw before scooting closer to Phlox and then flopping full bodied on top of him, tail thumping the floor as she landed. As the purrloin was, the growlithe ignored the skitty's offense and continued on.

Spotting her roughhousing, Valrún frowned. "Lela, gentle." The warning earned a curious look from the pup as she turned back to Phlox, confused. She was being gentle!

At Matilda's request, the redhead nodded and walked over to lock the door and turn the sign to closed in the window. A couple walking by turned their heads at the movement and the boy offered a nervous smile in response before turning away, feeling awkward. "It's locked," he told Tilly, trailing after her while two of the cats and the puppy bounded after her.

Val bit back a snicker as the florist demanded her cat walk. Helpful as ever, Lela bounded up beside him, content to keep her feline friend company. The redhead tilted his head curiously as each feline was outfitting with a harness and leash. He'd never thought to leash Lela. The pup was pretty good about staying at his side. But maybe he should in public?

"Oh, yes, ma'am." Quickly, Val jumped at the opportunity to be of use and grabbed the handle of the wagon to lead it outside around the back of the building while Matilda locked up. "Where to?"

Phlox blinked wide green eyes at the boy’s words before meeting Lela’s gaze, equally perplexed. Humans were so silly sometimes. It’s like they expected Pokemon to be as fragile as they were!

Til turned from locking the back door to face the redhead, face reflexively lapsing into a smile at the sight of the boy. Funny the difference just a few days could make; Valrun already looked so much happier and healthier, and she already couldn’t imagine life without him in it. She walked lightly over to the wagon, not quite skipping, and leaned down to point to a tag attached to the first arrangement. ”The addresses are on each tag, and I load the wagon in order of the route I need to take, so this one will be closest. It’s actually just around the corner!”

She paused a moment in thought. The map app Aureliusz had shown her would certainly make this job much easier for the boy, who didn’t have the luxury of having grown up in this town, but she couldn’t recall seeing Val use a phone. She pulled her own phone out of her pocket and opened the app. ”Here!” She handed the shiny device to the boy without the slightest hesitation. ”Have you ever read a map? We’re here now.” She pointed at the screen to a small dot she had programmed as home. ”You can just punch the delivery address into the app and then follow the map.” She lifted a brow. ”Do you have a phone, by the way, petit? This app had maps for every city in Ho’ohiki. It’s very useful.”

Tilly was the sort of person Valrún had no trouble being around. She never expected too much from him, never pushed. He was given an out at every opportunity without making it seem like she thought him to be cowardly. And she was pretty. It was hard not to admire her. After all, she was one of his heroes! At her smile, the boy bit back one of his own, hyperaware that his cheeks were warming in response.

Valrún devoted his attention to the tags on the arrangements in the hopes she wouldn't notice his blush. He transferred the handle of the wagon to one hand as she offered her phone to him and the boy frowned at the image there as she indicated where they stood. He had used maps before, but never a digitalized one like this. It was fancy and far more technological than he was familiar with. The phone Mrs. Bennett had given him was best compared to a tank. Though it was small, it was also blocky and could withstand quite a bit of abuse. For the most part, he left it alone in his bag.

Valrún nodded at her question distractedly as he multitasked and plugged in the address as indicated on the arrangement. "Yeah. But I don't think it can do this. Just phone calls, I think. Maybe some messages? I'm not good at writing them, though." In fact, there was a slew of messages from Mrs. B. Usually, the boy just called in response; texting was too difficult when he had to hit the same button numerous times just for one letter. It was easier to just call.

At least, her phone and the map weren't too hard to follow. "Got it," he said with some measure of pride when the path was highlighted for them to follow. He offered the phone back to her to better handle the wagon and started pulling it dutifully in the direction the map had indicated.

Til nodded along as he explained the limitations of his phone. ”Still, I suppose I should get your number, non? And you should have mine, in case you need anything?” She looped an arm casually over the boy’s shoulders and gave him a gentle squeeze, matching her pace to his. The more she thought about it, though, the more she felt a phone with a little more function--one that could at least text easily!--would be a good thing for a boy like him to have. A phone that could keep him from getting lost. And goodness, a phone that could send pictures and Snapchat and give the boy a bit of fun. Surely he deserved a bit of fun! He needed a coat of his own, too, so he didn’t have to borrow Aure’s to come out--though she was sure the baker didn’t mind. She thought idly about where the delivery route would take them...it should work.

They quickly reached their first stop and Til lifted her arm from the boy’s shoulders to pick up the flowers. ”Well done! This part is simple enough. We just knock on the door and hand them over, non?” With a wink she strolled up the to door, cats in tow and bag containing the egg in its cozy incubator over one shoulder. She knocks, then glances back at Val. ”If no one answers in a minute or two, we just leave them on the doorstep and go on our merry way, like flower fairies.”

The suggestion proved unnecessary, as a woman soon opened the door to accept the flowers with delight. Til felt the buoyant pleasure she always did when people were made happy by her flowers, a smile of unrestrained happiness lighting her face as she walked back to the wagon. Ultimately, no matter how many paths she tired, this was why she always came back to the same one--flowers brought people joy. ”And that’s all there is to it!”

As the pair set off toward their next stop, she looped and arm through Val’s free one. ”It’s nice to see you feeling so much better. You’re comfortable at Aure’s? Things are going well?” Her voice showed genuine interest, and she watched the boy closely. He wasn’t the most forthcoming child, so she paid careful attention, making it her own responsibility to suss out if something was wrong.

At Tilly's suggestion they should swap numbers, Valrún mouthed a muted 'oh' before pulling his out of his pocket as if he'd forgotten it was there. The boy rarely paid much mind to it; Aure had ensured he take it with him in the first place so he could call in case he got lost on his way to the shop. The boy offered it to her for her to input her number. In truth, he wasn't all that great at using it and preferred to keep it just for emergencies mainly.

Before he met Mrs. Bennett, the casual way Matilda slung her arm across his shoulders would have earned at the very least a snapping demand not to touch him. He'd come a long way since he first met the rancher. The older woman had made the boy realize not everyone was out to hurt him. Though he'd only known Tilly a short while, it was plain to see she was kind and had his best interests at heart. Like Mrs. Bennett had, she treated him like a person rather than a child. She didn't talk down to him, didn't talk at him. She spoke with him, and he could tell she listened. And not only to the things he was saying, but even those he didn't.

As they reached their first destination, he fought to hide the frown as her warmth left his side. He naturally gravitated towards the florist, but not enough to follow her all the way to the door while he had the cart in hand. He watched as the felines followed after her. Lela looked after her as well, and very nearly followed, but a glance back showed her boy remained in place, so she hovered near him instead.

Valrún watched with interest as the recipient opened the door and awed over the arrangement. Of more note to the redhead was the way Tilly seemed so uplifted by it. She was...a very giving, kind soul. Val had been around enough liars in his life to know how to read expressions in a snap. Tilly didn't have to force her smiles. They came freely - more so when she was able to make the people around her happy. The boy vowed to allow himself to show that she did the same for him more often. It was hard to let down his guard, but he could do it more if it meant she'd smile like that.

As she rejoined him and looped an arm through his, a blush warmed his cheeks. Despite his newly made vow to show his emotions more readily, he couldn't help but cant his face away to hide the reaction. It took great effort to look up, but his smile was far from forced. Her happiness was infectious.

"Mhmm," he replied as he pulled the cart along towards the next destination on her phone. "He's very nice." And quiet. And best of all, he didn't push his way into his space. It was as if the baker carefully interpreted his reactions before proceeding in most things. The pair of them were still feeling each other out, but Valrún at least hadn't had the embarrassing inclination to flinch whenever he moved his arm around him. Aureliusz was as far from his father as day was to night.

"He doesn't eat meat," the boy added as if it were a vital and confusing piece of information, a small frown in place. It was hard for the redhead to fathom, as he quite enjoyed it.
