Content Warning: Cursing, physical violence against Pokemon, physical violence against a child, kidnapping, child trafficking.

Scrap walked down the street along Una Way, hands shoved into the pockets of her gray coat. Scratch paced at her side and Bones was in her drawstring bag that bounced lightly between her shoulder blades. Whisk was curled up somewhere around her stomach in her coat; she could feel his warmth huddled against her. Trip and Squish were in their pokeballs and her fingers brushed against the minimized orbs to ensure herself they were still in place. The Inkay was still carrying around the lucky egg, the little oblong charm oddly soothing for the troubled dual type--so she was happy to let him hold onto it.

Ocean blue eyes cast around her surroundings as she maneuvered around some junk in the street. She didn't typically spend much time on this route, really only when she was heading out of the area to Agri, Campana, or Caecus and the small blonde didn't make those trips often. Tonight, however, she was following up on a tip about some trainers bullying younger trainer's out of their Pokemon around the area. It had been a problem in the training parks in Uberrime, but by working with Lupo, they seemed to have chased them off for the most part. At rumors there were setting up shop here, she decided to take a look.

Scrap hung around most the day, but no luck. The sun was starting to dip behind the buildings and it was time to grab some dinner on her way back 'home' and prepare to try again the next day. Things were quiet, but not in the unsettling way. There were a few other people around, mostly people in similar situations like her own, so they tended to leave her alone and mind their own business. Something brushed against her leg, causing the waif to look down. Scratch's tail swung from the girl's leg to flick behind him, indicating there was something of interest behind them.

She took a few quick steps forward, turning around so she was facing Scratch and walking backwards. The girl smiled down at the feline. [color=darkcyan]"So, I thought we'd hit that pizza place up. Maybe try the wings this time. Why a pizza place would have wings, I don't know, but others seemed to really like them." She chatted animatedly to the dark type, taking the opportunity to look up to see what was so interesting behind them. When her eyes met his, she felt like a bucket of ice water had been dumped over her head. To anyone else, he looked like a scruffy teenager of about eighteen. Dark hair, too thin, and dark smudges under his tell-tale blood-shot eyes. But she knew him. The last she'd been this close to him, he stood there with his hands shoved into his pockets as the van doors were slammed in her tear-streaked face.

Scrap didn't have Scratch then--she had no one--so the feline didn't understand the look of shock and near panic to cross her girl's face. The blonde kept her step and with the Purrloin looking back as well to spot the culprit for Scrap's expression, neither one of them noticed the corner they were coming up on nor the man coming around it.

Snubbull Egg: 3/20

The day was growing late, and Taka's patrol was just about over. All three of his partners ranged around him. He was giving Muffin a chance at working off lead, and so far so good--the Riolu was staying nearby, walking at his side more often than not. Kant flashed and darted at his other side, constantly vigilant. Plato, tired after a day on patrol, lagged behind the group, but was close enough Taka wasn't bothered. He wore a bag slung tight across his body that cradled his carefully insulated egg.

Muffin's ears perked up just before they turned a corner, and Taka glanced down at her with one eyebrow raised. He heard a voice then, and looked up from the Riolu at his side just in time to see the child walking backward--but not quickly enough to get out of her way. He lowered his hands reflexively to her shoulders to steady her as she recoiled off of him, lifting them away as soon as he was sure she was steady. "Whoops, sorry about that. Bad timing."

As he smiled down at the--boy? girl? he wasn't sure--Taka's eyes flicked over her and noticed several things. First of all, the kid had some telltale signs of a street kid--multiple layers of clothes, all in varying states of the gray-ish grunge that came of long times (and many wearings) between washings, hair dull and raggedly uneven in its cut. She looked well fed, though, if small, and her clothes seemed in fairly good condition. She also had a tension to her posture that gave the lie to her casual expression. Something was wrong with this kid.

"Is there something I can help you with?" He pitched his voice gentle, reassuring. "I'm Ranger Torres, from the Uberrime Station." He glanced around quickly, looking for a threat, but nothing obvious leaped out.

Muffin fidgeted beside him, also of the opinion the child was upset for some reason but not sure why. She looked to the Purrloin trailing behind the girl and tilted her head, struggling to read signs of trouble in the feline--though she did seem to be glancing behind them, as though they were being followed. "Is someone chasing you?" Muffin asked, using her serious, "professional ranger" voice. "We can help! We're rangers!" She worked to hold down her enthusiasm at the last bit--she was still awfully excited to be a ranger.

She had stared at him too long, or maybe it was the expression on her face--she was too distracted by the memories and panic that started welling up. Either way, the teenager knew she recognized him and that this reunion was not accidental, so he sped up in pursuit. When he saw a man come around the corner, and the child collide with him, he abruptly turned to cross the street as casually as he could manage with the tension in his body.

Scrap jumped like she'd been shocked, stumbling back forward and whipping around. Her heart was in her throat and she'd nearly sent herself crashing to the sidewalk in her haste to get away from whoever touched her. When she first looked at him, her turquoise eyes were wide and wild, but as he stayed back and spoke gently to her, she pushed her alarm down. It only took a moment to process his ranger's uniform, but she wasn't letting her guard completely down. She considered him for a moment at his offer. Rangers were usually good guys and she hadn't met an ill-meaning one yet. The problem was their idea of 'helping' was not usually helpful. Lupo was an exception to this rule and she knew that.

The blonde shook her head, shoving her hands in her coat pockets. "No, I'm good. Just...heading home." She answered, careful to keep her voice even and lower than normal. The waif worked her way around him, giving him enough space he would need to take a step forward to grab if he wanted to stop her. She also kept facing him, resulting in her moving backwards again. The Purrloin hung closely around the child's feet, moving with grace to avoid being stepped on or left behind. At the canine's question, Scratch glanced over to where the teenager was passing them on the other side of the street. "No, we're okay. Just need to be aware and cautious, right?" The dark type commented as she followed Scrap around them.

The specialist took a few steps back from Ranger Torres, half wandering if he was going to let her go without a fuss. "Thanks though. Bye." As Scrap turned around to face forward, she just caught sight of the teenager turning another corner and disappearing from view. That had been a close one. Thank you, Mr.Ranger.

That momentary flash of pure panic made Taka deeply uneasy. No child should look like that at a mere bump with a stranger, especially not a child simply on their way home. Muffin was tense, too, which spoke to the wrongness of the situation. It was not at all like the Riolu to be on guard.

Muffin followed the Purrloin’s gaze to the harmless looking teen and her eyes narrowed. Contrary to her trainer’s belief that she thought everyone was her friend, Muffin was aware that not all people were good. That was why rangers were so important, after all--they protected Pokemon (and people too) from bad people. The boy didn’t look bad, but she lifted her nose into the breeze to get a good scent, sorting aside the ambient smells, Taka, Kant, the girl, the Purrloin, and the scent of feathers that clung to the girl. Stale sweat and something sickly sweet almost overpowered the boy’s innate scent, and Muffin exhaled sharply to clear her nostrils. She didn’t like whatever that smell was.

As the girl slipped around and continued on her way, watching them warily, Muffin looked up at Taka with liquid crimson eyes. He dropped a hand to ruffle the fluff on top of her head and spoke softly in Japanese. ”Don’t worry, baby girl. We’re not walking away just yet.”

”Good,” his partner huffed softly. The girl was only a baby after all. Babies needed protecting. Kant hissed softly, bored at the inactivity, while Plato sighed contentedly and sagged on the pavement.

The ranger took a moment to casually bend down and snap a leash back onto Muffin’s thick collar, making sure its Keldeo insignia was visible past her fluff. As well as the young Riolu was doing with her impulse control, he couldn’t afford to have it lapse at a bad moment if things got serious. He took longer than necessary, watching the retreating child out of the corner of his eye. When she had gotten a comfortable distance away, he stood back up and walked a few steps further forward in case she was watching before turning around and trailing the blond hair bobbing ahead.

Scrap puffed out a breath of relief when the man didn't stop her, but the situation did little to relieve her anxieties. Her gaze darted to the other side of the street, but the teenager was no longer in sight. That didn't help her feel any better. Her fingers pulled at the inside of her pockets, griping the the fabric in small, tight hands. Her stomach was tight and she was just sure something was wrong. The child looked down to Scratch. "At least he's gone now, right?" Uncertainty leaked out in her voice as she sought reassurance from the dark type. The Purrloin's tail flicked with displeasure. Yes, he was no longer following them, but she would rather be able to keep an eye on him. She nodded her head for her girl though.

The girl strained her ears for the sounds around her, more specifically, sounds from behind her. Nothing seemed out of place, but she glanced back anyway and the muscles in her shoulders stiffened. The ranger was following her. No, he's just walking this way, it's fine. Scrap tried to get her muscles to relax, but to no avail--she was a pile of knots. There was plenty of distance between them. Even so, the next corner she came up on, the blonde took it--with another fleeting glance back-- even if it wasn't the way home.

Her body was suddenly jerked forward by the back of her coat and she gasped in shock. She heard a surprised yowl from Scratch. Scrap thrashed as she was lifted from her feet, an arm closing around her midsection and pulling her against someone. "N--" A gloved hand clamped down over her mouth. The girl sunk her teeth into it, but it didn't seem to matter beyond making the man hiss. "Knock it off, girl." She was only vaguely aware of her bag being jerked from her shoulders, the struggling Bones trying to escape from it. Everything moved so fast--too fast.

Scrap felt her body fly through the air and she landed hard against something cold. Pain shot through her temple and she gasped for breath, eyes squeezed shut against the stabbing through her head. A thump sound followed by angry screeching had the girl's bright eyes snapping open and frantically looking around. Recognizing the inside of a van, panic welled up in her chest, her breaths coming in rasping gasps. She cried out as the door slammed shut.

Taka strove to look casual as he followed the girl, especially when she glanced back and saw him. The kid was an anxious mess, he could see it from here. When she whipped around the first corner she came to his hopes crashed. She wasn’t going to make this easy for him, and he seemed to be actively frightening her. He weighed for a moment if it would be best to let her go her own way--she had declined his help, after all. Even as he pretended to entertain the thought, he continued on his same course, ready to turn the corner. He couldn’t leave a child in possible danger--he was simply not capable. Muffin’s tense form at his side agreed.

The sudden sound of a yowl had him picking up his pace--even Plato was moving faster, if not quite keeping up with Taka’s run. Despite his speed, when he rounded the corner there was no sign of the girl or her Pokemon, just a small handful of vehicles, all legally parked. His brain worked quickly, trying to decide the best way to search all the alleys she could have reached, when his eyes caught on a man standing next to the open passenger door of a nondescript black van. That was not remarkable--what was was the small gray coat he was tossing into the vehicle. The same color as the one the girl had been wearing.

Taka felt a hard knot in his chest, but kept his expression pleasantly professional as he called ”Hey!” and broke into a jog. He stopped at the driver's side door and smiled at the man he found there. ”Hi there. My name is Ranger Torres, with the Uberrime Station? I wonder if you could help me. I’m looking for a blond girl. She’s about so high,” he gestured with his hand, ”has a Purrloin with her? She would just have come around that corner there, come right past the back of your van, just like I did.” He wasn’t going to outright say “Hey by the way I have your plate number,” but if they had any brains at all he’d done as well as.

Muffin sat at his side, patient but tense. For once she wasn’t looking up at her partner with wide pleading eyes, just begging for permission to greet every human in sight--instead she watched the man to whom Taka spoke closely, nostrils flared wide to pull in scent. Without even looking the ranger lowered a hand to lightly touch the Remoraid on his other side as Kant began to fidget in place, hoping for once this might turn into a fight.

The leaner man next to the opened passenger door jumped at the shout, head jerked to face who ever was addressing them. The other guy was standing by the closed back doors and his reaction was smoother than his partners. He turned his attention to the approaching ranger and quirked a brow, his expression schooled into polite curiosity. Before he could reply, his comrade spoke up. "We didn't see any girl." He replied a bit too quickly, earning him a reproachful glance. "That's cause you couldn't find your nose if it wasn't attached to your face." The stockier stranger quipped, then turned back to Taka. "Well, I saw her, anyway, Ranger Torres." He gestured to an alley across the street. "Went that way."

The twitchy man was eyeing the Riolu, but tried to stay out of it since, apparently, he wasn't being any help. He folded his arms and leaned against the black van, but he was having a hard time sitting still. Thank Arceus the damn van was sound-proofed, but as he feel vibrations through his shoulder as the damn brat moved around. What the hell was she doing in there?

A twitching black nose poked out from under the van. Whisk's heart was beating quickly and he was still tying to figure out what happened. Things seemed fine, aside from Scrap smelling a little anxious, but then his world from inside her coat was being jerked around. He'd been shaken up, squished, and then unceremoniously dumped from his snug spot and onto the cold ground with a surprised squeak as Scrap's jacket was ripped from her. The small Rattata ran for cover as large booted feet nearly trampled him. Where was Scrap? What did they do to her? Or the others?

The darkness closed in and Scrap's breaths turned panicked and ragged. She couldn't get enough air. Her fingers scrambled desperately for anything that might be a handle or latch, but was quickly forgotten in her need to get out. "LET ME OUT! PLEASE!" The girl banged on the hard, metal doors with reckless abandon. "HELP! PYROAR! LUPO! ANYONE! PLEASE!" Her voice cracked as she screamed. The hard surface of the door cut into and bruised her small fists, but she didn't notice.

Scratch finally managed to work her way out of the net, but her girl's fear-scent was nearly overwhelming and almost had the Purrloin in her own state of panic. Her emerald eyes adjusted to the lack of the light as much as they could, so she was left with her other senses to guide her. Bones was also throwing a fit and she turned toward the sounds of the angry vulture. "BONES! I need you calm down. Are you trapped?" She yowled in an attempt to be heard over Scrap. The noise from the dual type quieted. "I got out of the bag, but I'm in a cage now." The Vullaby sounded half scared, half pissed. "Okay. Let's get you out so we can all get out of here. It's up to us, Scrap just can't right now."

"No, help Scrap. I can get this. She needs help, Scratch. Listen to her." The worry in Bones' tone had the Purrloin flinching. "I know, but I can't get that door open without you. And we're not leaving you here. Now focus. We attack the bars on three. One, two, three!"

Taka didn’t let his gaze linger too long on the thin man who was so quick to answer. He did, however, internally roll his eyes. That’s not suspicious at all, now is it? What an idiot. What he wasn’t, however, was a problem--that was much more likely to be the man at the back. That one was clever--and possibly dangerous. Taka could admit that he was impressed by how smooth the guy was; too bad he didn’t have a better partner--one quicker to hide the evidence and cooler under pressure. Taka smiled a charming smile at the second man. ”Why thank you, that’s very helpful. I appreciate it.” He reached down casually again and gave Kant two quick taps before turning and walking back toward the shorter man. With a smirk, the Remoraid turned the other direction and moved around the front of the van, waiting, little crackles of electricity starting to flicker over his smooth scales.

As they started to move, Muffin caught a glimpse of movement under the van and took a step toward the Rattata lurking there. That...was not your standard Uberrime alley rat. If it wasn’t a street ‘mon, it was probably someone’s pet. But did it belong to the girl or one of the men? She inhaled again and there, yes, she could smell the scent of female-human-child clinging to the little rodent’s fur. Taka paused in his motion to glance back, giving the Riolu a moment while she lowered her head to the smaller ‘mon. ”Are you alright? Did you see what happened to your girl? We’re trying to help her.”

Catching sight of the black Rattata Muffin was addressing, Taka opted to buy her a little time to get some more information. He continued to the back of the van, stopping in front of the man and shaking his head a little, an indulgent smile on his lips. ”She’s always got to check with the strays and make sure they’re doing okay. I swear she insists I spend half my paycheck feeding wild mooches.” He leaned one shoulder against the back of the van, seemingly relaxed and in no rush. He could feel vibrations in the metal--some kind of irregular rhythm--and felt cold prickles on the back of his neck. He heard nothing unusual, though--that was some serious soundproofing. If they didn’t have the girl, there was still something going on with this van. He was glad Kant was poised to fry its electrical system it should they try to take off.

He’d give Muffin another minute to finish her talk with the Rattata and get back to him before he pushed the envelope, though. And where...there. Plato was nearly caught up, too. Good; they might need his help. ”So about this girl. Have you seen her around here before? She was acting kinda off, and I was wondering if she’s one of the homeless kids from the camp or if she’s just somewhere she shouldn’t be, you know?” He kept his tone as easy as his posture, but watched the man closely, ready to move if he needed to.

The smaller man was relieved that the ranger was choosing to ignore his incompetent partner, who he was going to have some severe words with later. He bowed his head. "Not at problem, Ranger." Things seemed to be going well, but despite being told which way the waif went, the man was still hanging around. He didn't think much of the touch to the levitating fish that sent it flying off, but narrowed his eyes at the Riolu sniffing around the tires of the van. Could it smell that the girl was in the van? A glimpse of black fur made him relax. She wasn't tracking the girl, she was being nosy with a rat.

Whisk flinched back when Muffin's head came suddenly into view, letting out a small squeak of alarm, but he was too disoriented and scared to flee. The Riolu's words, however, helped focus his thoughts and dark eyes grew large at her promise that they were trying to help. He moved back forward, his small nose working as he tried taking in every scent around him. "No, I didn't see. It was all too fast! But she's here, I'm sure of it! She wouldn't have left me behind!" He speech was even faster than normal, the words running together. "I was in her jacket, then everything was jerking around and something squished me, then I was on the ground and nearly stepped on!" Maybe telling the canine what happened would help? Why couldn't he have seen where she went?

The man at the back of the van offered a half smile and nodded at the ranger's offered information--he really didn't give a damn. Tension crept into his neck when the intruder leaned on the van, knowing he would feel what he was feeling, but maybe he wouldn't think much of it. Then again, if he was so concerned about her, why didn't he go off looking for her. This was not looking promising. At his further questions, he shrugged. "I don't come down here much. But, yeah, I would guess she was part of the homeless group. Why would a normal kid be down here? Maybe she was 'off' cause she stole something?" He suggested, pushing himself up off the van and was just getting ready to work on excusing themselves when his partner spoke up again.

"Hey now...what's that thing doing?" The taller man asked, tension in his voice as he moved to look at the Remoraid poised in front of the van. The smarter man stepped where he could see too, a frown curving his mouth as he turned back to Taka. "I'm a little confused here, Ranger. You asked some questions, I answered you." He gestured to the Remoraid. "Were you planning on holding us here for some reason? I thought you wanted to find that kid."

Scrap tried to continue yelling out, but her breaths were coming too quickly and her head was starting to spin. In the pitch black, there was nothing to focus her eyes on beyond the darkness and the disorientation had her clinging to the door, making her pounding finally cease. Tremors racked through her small frame as she pressed her cheek against the cold metal, the only sound in the small area her rasping, panicked sobs and the two Pokemon trying to work together.

The pair of dark types managed to break the cage open, freeing the Vullaby. Careful of where Scrap was collapsed against one of the doors, the two focused on the other one. Scratch gathered the dark energy around one paw and slashes at the metal with her shadow claw, then backed off to give Bones room to use her pluck attack. The attacks sent shudders through the vehicle's frame, but after a few repetitions, the Purrloin felt along the door and hissed in frustration. "It's barely doing anything. We're not moving yet, but we're running out of time."

Bones shifted her way to Scrap, nudging at the girl with her beak, but she flinched back from the contract and pressed herself against the side of the van. "Scrap, it's me...Bones." When the child didn't respond, the Vullaby looked in Scratch's direction. "Scratch, what do we do?" The Purrloin's eyes flashed in the dark, her jaw clenching with determination. "We don't stop. See if you can calm her down, I'm afraid she's going to pass out if she keeps breathing like that. I've got the door." But even with several more attacks she wasn't getting much of anywhere and fatigue was starting to drag at her paws.

This wasn't going to work. She wasn't strong enough. She failed to protect her girl and no telling what was going to happen to next. Her heart hammered in her chest and her stomach grew tight with the thought. No. No! She would not stop until Scrap was free.

Muffin nodded along, paying close attention to the Rattata’s hurried speech. ”Don’t worry. We’ll find her,” the Riolu reassured firmly. Taka wouldn’t stop until the child was safe she was sure of it. She moved around the van to stand beside Taka, nudging his hand hard twice as though demanding petting. He scratched behind her ears in response, almost absently, his attention still on the man before him.

Taka shook his head slowly, expression thoughtful. ”Nah, I don’t think so. I know what a guilty kid looks like, and this one wasn’t guilty. She looked more like she was in trouble, y’know? But I couldn’t see what spooked her.” He watched carefully as the man grew more impatient. Was it simply the delay, the ranger wondered, or was it that he must know the ranger could feel the vibrations running through the door?

He glanced up at the younger’s man’s strained question. ”Oh, don’t worry about him, he’s just kinda nosy about mechanical things. Not sure why, really. But hell, maybe you should let him take a look!” Smirking, Taka raised an arm casually, rapping the knuckles of his index and middle fingers against the back door of the van. ”Seems to be running pretty damn rough.” He kept his tone mild, lightly teasing, but didn’t break eye contact with the older man before him.

At the older man’s aggressive query, Taka knew the ruse was just about over. Fortunately, Plato was in range now should he be needed. Taka stood back up straight and smiled his most professional smile. ”Thanks so much for all your help. I’m sure you wouldn’t mind helping me with one more little thing? We got a BOLO for a van with a description matching yours--really helpful, I know, there’re only about a thousand like it in the city, am I right? Anyway, would you mind opening the doors just so I can have a look? Don’t want anyone to say I didn’t do my duty. Then I’ll get out of your hair and hopefully find that poor kid.” He waited patiently for an answer, body resting in a state of relaxation that was trained rather than genuine. You had to be able to move in a fight, after all, and you couldn’t do that if you were all locked up with tension.

Whisk almost sagged to the ground in relief at the canine's reassurance. "Thank you, thank you. I'll help however I can!" He dropped his nose to the ground and sniffed furiously, but he was still too scared to venture too far out from under the car, but he did see that the door was open on one side. Lifting his head into the air, he could make out a trace of Scrap's scent! The possibility of his trainer being close at paw emboldened him with enough courage to dart toward the passenger-side door. Once he was close enough, he leaped up and scrambled into the vehicle. There was no Scrap, but there was her coat. Maybe he could get to her pokeballs and release Trip and Squish?

The patience of the older man was definitely wearing thin and starting to show in the downward curve of his mouth. "Look, I feel for the kid, really. But I got my own business down here and I don't have time to be worrying about much else. I wish you luck, though." The attempted sympathy in his voice was lacking, but he didn't seem to care. He did manage to keep from glancing at the door of the van, wondering if damn kid was still making a ruckus or not--he'd have to repay her with a few good knocks for the trouble she was causing. Or maybe he'd just make her watch while he threw her Pokemon in the pits.

Bones did as Scratch suggested, moving toward Scrap again and gently nudging at the girl's leg with her beak. "Scrap, it's Bones." When she didn't respond nearly at all, worry flooded through the bird and she clambered into the child's lap. The weight from the Vullaby had the dizzy girl stirring and at least she wasn't pushing her away. "Scrap!" Bones bounced on her legs.

"Bones?" Her voice was strained from emotion and screaming and she sounded groggy. Her hands fumbled, but found the Vullaby and pulled her close to her chest. "I'm scared...what do we do?" Voice cracking, she'd barely managed to finish the question.

The dual type nuzzled into her trainer's arms. "It's okay, Scrapper. We won't let anyone hurt you." The bird wanted to promise her that Scratch was going to get them out, but she could hear the Purrloin attacking the door and her soft curses as it didn't seem to do much.

Things went silent for a moment, then there was a sharp raprap on the door. Scratch's head snapped up from where it had been hanging with exhaustion and near defeat at the sound. Did that mean they were ready to move? Panic and rage rushed through her, her fur standing on end before her body started to glow.
