WELCOME TO OKEANOS TOWN
LOCAL INFORMATION
Local Pokémon: Wingull Clamperl Buizel Slowpoke Marill
Okeanos' residential Pokémon are generally very domesticated and comfortable around humans, as all aggressive Pokémon have been driven out of town by the tourism boards. Clamperl, rarely seen in the wild, are harvested here, collected in large man-made basins and kept for their useful pearl-creating abilities. Okeanos' official bird is Wingull.
A vibrant port town, earning capital from large transport ships which service the rest of the island, Okeanos draws in gym leaders, breeders, ranchers, and researchers alike with its variety of shopping options and official -type gym. As a relatively new settlement, many inhabitants of Okeanos are foreigners from other regions, and cultural tension is often high between these newcomers and those who were originally natives of Piscari. Recently settled tourists range all the way from French immigrants to Indonesian newcomers, creating a vibrant and diverse culture that can sometimes boil over with the many cultural differences between new and old residents.

"Thank you for your time today Mr. Spade. We'll take some time to process your application and contact you in a couple of days to let you know if you've got the job." The interviewer claimed, standing up and offered his hand to the trainer for a handshake with all the professional poise of a seasoned store manager. "If anything I should thank you for the opportunity, have a good day sir." Chris replied after completing the shake with his own hand with a smile, and left the site that he had been summoned for a job interview for.

About twenty paces outside the place after disappearing into the crowd of people, Chris exhaled and let the smile fall from his face. The pressure of keeping a likable and positive air around him wasn't easy when being evaluated like that. Chris was glad the interview was over. In truth, the man had a hunch he wouldn't be contacted again. After all, he had been on the job hunting game for a while now. With all that time spent applying and talking to potential employers he acquired a certain level of experience. If Chris paid close attention to the interviewer he could guess his odds of getting a gig pretty well. From the way interviewers asked questions, to their body language, even how they answered questions when he asked provided some merit of insight. Needless to say, this opportunity didn't look entirely favorable, though that was mostly his own self doubt in being the ideal candidate most employers wanted talking. Oh well, he'd just have to keep searching.

Though that quest would have to wait, with the interruption of Chris's gurgling stomach demanding food. Perhaps grabbing a bite to eat wouldn't be such a bad idea? "Can't look for work on an empty stomach." Chris admitted with a chuckle, convincing himself to take a detour. The ex-miner made his way through the crowded area of the shopping district, keeping a sharp eye out for any restaurants that looked promising. Eventually he found something that piqued his curiosity. A cafe, one that seemed familiar from what the place was called. "After you... Where have I heard that name before?" Chris asked himself, walking closer to the establishment and peering into the place. What he saw convinced him that dining here was a great idea! Inside there were indeed people dining like any other place, but among them were also trainers from all walks of life Pokemon battling. "That's right... Mouku did say that there was a battle cafe somewhere in this town. Looks like I've found it." Chris muttered, grinning as he walked into the place without a second thought.

The trainer didn't have to wait long for one of the wait staff to approach him and explained to him how the battle cafe worked. The process being that he take a seat, order some food, and the next customer to arrive would be their opponent. "Seems simple enough. Lead the way ma'am." Chris commented with a nod, following the waitress to one of the many tables, complete with a menu, utensils, and condiments. "I'll have the daily special." the hungry treasure hunter said after looking over the menu, and handed it over to the server.

The meal didn't take long to arrive, and Chris found himself chomping down on the food as though he hadn't eaten in forever, when in reality only a few hours passed since breakfast. He wasn't sure when his opponent was going to show up, so the treasure hunter figured he'd best get fueled up for the fight to come quickly.

Several patrons of the cafe looked up to the sudden sounds of whup-whup-whup-whup coming closer, and getting louder. One of the waitstaff immediately rushed beside Chris's table and began to move the chairs from one side, taking them away, as she came back, and placed one plate with silverware and a few bowls on the table. Another waiter came over and put down some biscuits, and a glass of lemonade. Good luck, mate, you're going to need it... remarked the waiter as he moved off. About that same time the front door opened.

Several people nearly choked on their food as the bouncing washing machine led the way into the cafe. Several staff waved calling out Hey Torm! How's it going buddy! A few moments later in walked a young woman with piercing eyes as she scanned the room, not even pausing, as she headed towards the table near Chris. She tossed a quick glance towards the nearest waiter, My usual please.

The odd duo walked towards their table, as the washing machine wandered around on it's own side, and the girl used the chair. The girl put a small potted plant onto the table, with a small grepa plant inside. Looking towards Chris she decided to introduce herself first. Hello. The name is Jewel. I guess we will be opponents today. I wonder if you are good enough to break my winning streak?

Chris was about halfway done with his meal, taking a bite out of a piece of garlic bread when the signs of change started to appear. Like several others, he snapped to attention at the strange noises approaching the cafe. Then came the sudden rearrangement in his dining station by the waitstaff. Initially confused, it took Chris a bit to connect the dots and figure out that his opponent was coming. Invigorated with this news, he stuffed the rest of the loaf into his mouth, chewing with haste in anticipation of this mystery contender. The treasure hunter only smiled at the waiter's ominous warning, feeling more pumped than before with how strong this trainer must've been to warrant such concern. Surely this was going to be a fun match!

Upon witnessing Jewel's entrance, Chris had to do a double take and restrain himself from spitting out what he was chewing. Was that... Washing machine her Pokemon? After regaining his composure, Chris gulped down what food remained in his mouth and watched the washing machine with some level of curiosity. He then idly took out his Pokedex and clicked the scan button to get a name for this Torm. "Rotom, the plasma Pokemon. It's electric like body can enter certain kinds of machines and possess them to cause all sorts of mischief." the pokecyclopedia relayed before Chris put the device away and addressed the confident girl who approached him and offered a greeting. "So it appears. Name's Chris, nice to meet you miss Jewel." Chris replied with a nod of acknowledgement. "As for your question... There's only really one way to find that out." the ex-miner added with a grin and glint of excitement in his eyes. "That Rotom of yours gonna be your first Pokemon to battle today?" the digger asked, gesturing to Torm while pondering which Pokemon in his party to send out.

That is an interesting question. If I were to answer yes to it, then that would give you an advantage in choosing yours. If you were also able to go first, that would be a double advantage. So I return the question to you, I will answer it, but only provided we get to initiate the fight. The girls convoluted response seemed to hint at, this having been an issue in the past. The washing machine, not paying Chris any mind, had seemed to notice the bread basket and was busily stuffing rolls into it's mouth, stabbing them with the power plug. He buzzed happily as he blew through the basket in under a minute.

In that short amount of time, a waiter appeared with a juicy burger and placed it before Jewel. Jewel pulled off a pair of gloves, which until now had been barely noticeable. But as she tugged the red white and green gloves off, it seemed she was one of those slow to let go of the holidays. Taking a huge bite, Jewel looked to the other trainer to measure his response. He had no pokemon out, that was smart. She had no idea what she may have to face, but that only made it more of a challenge, a challenge that like most, Jewel would rise to the occassion to meet.

"Well fighting's half the reason we're here, so you won't have to worry about that part. I'm game to starting the fight after we've made our choices. We'll decide who goes first once we've both confirmed which Pokemon we're gonna be using." Chris responded casually as he stuck his spoon into a small mound of gravy littered mashed potatoes on his plate and took a bite. While he ate, Chris glanced over to the washing machine again. There wasn't any guarantee that this Rotom would be their first challenge, but worrying about the details for what else she had waiting in the wings wouldn't make the selection any easier. So instead he focused on what he knew. Based on what he could learn about the plasma Pokemon from dexter, this Pokemon seemed to be an electric type based on the description, though there was more to the washing machine given his shape. Rover would have a pretty good shot against an electric type given his immunity to electric attacks, but the trainer wanted to save him for later since his other two companions had yet to partake in any official Pokemon battles. Snap didn't seem like the best option given his typing and less than cooperative attitude so that left...

"Alright, I've made my choice." Chris stated, shifting his gaze back to Jewel as he set down his spoon and fished out a cherish ball. He then expanded the ball and gave it a gentle toss to release the Pokemon from within. A burst of red light flashed as a small pink feline materialized from the device before the ball flew back into the ex-miner's hand. The cat took a moment to stretch, wagging her tail as she took in her surroundings. There were a lot of humans and other Pokemon here, some fighting, others chowing down on food! Grace took a moment to turn to her human, who smiled at her and gave the Skitty a pat on the head. She trilled with a smile, affectionately rubbing her face on the trainer's hand as he filled her in on what was going on.

"We're gonna be spending some time together battling today Grace. This young lady here and her Pokemon are gonna be our opponents. Say hi Grace!"

"Skitty skit!" She called out with pep, waving with her tail like a hand in greeting before she took notice of movement of an object out of the corner of her eye and started to playfully chase her own tail.

"I've chosen my Pokemon Miss Jewel. Ball's in your court now."

Jewel watched as the guy thought through his options and finally elected on a pokemon to use. It's a good thing she wasn't eating soup though, because when the little kitty appeared, she gave a start. A House pet pokemon? Really? Audibly sighing, obviously having expected something a bit more rare and unique. Finishing the last bite of her meal she stood and triggered one of the balls on her hip.

The red flashed, as a large round rocky pokemon took place of the light. The silverware on the table shivered momentarily as if being attracted by a powerful magnet. The geodude looked around, instantly recognizing his current location. Looking around his eyes fell on the nearest unknown pokemon. He crossed his arms and glowered at the skitty, but it probably didn't even notice as it was engaged in chasing it's own tail.

This is Flint. He will be my first choice. Flint you know the drill, let's head to the nearest unoccupied fighting area. The alolan geodude nodded and began to carefully wind his way through the few remaining tables between him and the arena section.
"Dude, Geo. Geo."

Whenever you are ready, feel free to follow. remarked Jewel as she stood and headed after Flint. A minute later she stood on one side of a battle field, with Flint placed partially into it. The rock pokemon seemed to be stretching, but could rocks actually stretch?

Chris frowned upon seeing the specialist's less than enthused reaction to Grace. What was wrong with choosing a Skitty? Sure, maybe Grace wasn't a particularly strong Pokemon yet... But he would not idly sit by and just let Jewel underestimate his Pokemon like this. The trainer was about to speak up when Jewel released her own Pokemon. His eyes widened at the familiar sight. He didn't need a Pokedex to identify the Geodude she summoned forth as their first challenger. Though this one looked... Different from the normal variety of Geodude like the one illustrated on the back of his vest. Did this chick have some kinda unique quirk theme for her team or something? For better or worse, Chris missed his window of opportunity to speak up and due to getting distracted by Flint. He didn't quite hear what Jewel had to say before the opposing duo departed for the battle arena, but he figured it'd be a good idea to go where they were going.

The treasure hunter turned to Grace, who by this point had ceased tail chasing and was beaming up at him, excited for the battle to come. ...By the great Regis he couldn't send Grace out there like this, not without a plan. He turned to where Jewel stood, now by the battle field and held up a finger to her as though to gesture for a bit of time. After doing that, he turned to Grace, who decided to hop up his seat and take a nibble at what remained of his meal--turning to have a face covered in crumbs and bits of food when Chris tried to get her attention. "Y-You've got a little..." Chris trailed off before just grabbing a napkin and wiping the excess food off of Grace's face. "Alright listen Grace. The opponent we're going to be fighting is pretty strong... It'll be a hard fight, so I need you to be brave and listen carefully to what I'm about to tell you." Chris relayed with a stern tone, whispering words into the pink feline's ear.

A few minutes later Chris and Grace finally managed to make their way to where the specialist and rock pokemon awaited them. "Sorry bout the wait, had to finish the meal." Chris said with a shrug, before walking over to their side of the battle field. "So given that you've got a type advantage, would it be too much to ask if we were to get the first move?"

Jewel smirked a bit as she recognized the slight confusion in the other trainers eyes. Guess he didn't know about alolan variants? This could make things interesting. She watched amused as he whispered something in his house pet's ears, most likely something to perk the kitty up and boost it's pride, if not something clever in regards to tactics. It didn't matter to Jewel. She had the edge in this fight, and she knew it, at least for this first round. It struck here then that they hadn't quite set the ground rules.

So how you wanna do this? 1 on 1? two on two? Three on three? Whatever you have verse whatever I got? Substitutions, yea or nay? I'm up for whatever's clever. Jewel waited, while her opponent took to the correct spot in the ring, and almost laughed, but managed to restrain herself when they asked for the first shot. Sure, you can take the first shot, Flint can take it.

The geodude pumped a fist in the air, causing the pendant hanging around it to sway a little. If her opponent looked carefully it would resemble a particularly sharp looking claw of something, maybe a sandslash. Flint we are going to go with battle strategy two. You know the drill, keep it clean, keep it tight. To indicate he was ready, Flint assumed a sumo stance and grunted, making a come on motion to the cat pokemon. Jewel looked on to her opponent, signaling she too was ready.

Well this was certainly unexpected. Normally Chris only really considered single battles as a standard for battling, but here Jewel was suggesting all these different variations and ground rules. The digger hummed thoughtfully, rubbing his chin as he wondered which set to use. "A singles battle with three Pokemon sounds good to me. Up to two substitutions allowed. If you're cool with that, we can start the battle." Chris replied as he turned to Grace. "Alrighty Grace, let's show them what we're made of!" Chris exclaimed as the pink feline in question was up until this point idly watching the various other Pokemon fighting in the different rings. So many different Pokemon... So many cool battles... Was she going to be able to be that cool too? Grace snapped to attention upon hearing Chris's words, mewing with enthusiasm as she readied herself and fell into a crouched battle stance. "Attack!" the trainer ordered, pointing to Flint.

With a loud NYA! Grace charged forward towards Flint, tail swishing back and forth as her tiny feet carried her towards the rock with defined eyebrows. She lowered her head as though to initiate a head on tackle, picking up momentum while she closed the gap between them. Once she was but a few paces away, Grace really honed in for the hit--only to jump once she was close enough. The pink feline then spun forward with her tail outstretched to use it like a flail in an attempt to smash Flint with Fake out.

Flint grinned at the fluffy kitty as it charged headforward intending to crash against it. He wondered if it would tickle when it hit. When the skitty suddenly did some crazy acrobatics he was trying to figure out what was going on when the tail slap suddenly smacked it in the side of the face, surprising him, and causing him to take a step back. It didn't hurt very much, but it was quite strange and he tried to wrap his mind around what happened.

Jewel almost laughed as the confused geodude tried to puzzle out what was going on. She had been working on his speed, so he should be able to piece it together since he should have seen it, but she was leaving it up to him for now.

"That's the way Grace! " Chris cheered as he marveled at the success of getting the first strike in. It was a good first step, but they'd need to keep their enemies on their toes if they were to emerge victorious in the first round. Given what he knew of Grace's skillset and talents, the first part of their attempted strategy had gone off without a hitch. This next part of the plan however would determine how well their considered tactics would hold water and the degree in which they'd have to adapt.

In the wake of landing the fake out, Grace used the momentum of the attack to bounce further forward, using the rock Pokemon as a jumping point. She then landed on her small feet without so much as a step out of place. Rather than whirling around and striking while the iron was hot however, Grace simply idled in place--trilling passively with a cute smile as she waited for her opponent to face her. She wagged her tail back and forth at Flint with her back turned to him, almost as though she were daring him to attack her from behind.

Jewel looked on, pressing her lips together thoughtfully, her index finger resting on the side of her mouth in a classic thinking position. This skitty was actually pretty good. Sure it didn't have any crazy effective moves offensively, but the defenses, and the speed of this thing. This may be a problem. With an audible sigh, she decided she should take command. The had not trained for something like this, which is annoying, since she thought she was ready for nearly any contingency. Even Saladin hadn't been so fast and graceful though.

As Flint spun about to attack the skitty with what appeared to be his tackle attack, Jewel stopped him in his tracks with a different command. Discharge now. No playing around Flint. Jewel's voice brooked no joking, but rather the harsh tone of the drill sergeant trainer within her. Eager to please as ever, the geodude gathered up his internal currents and then shot the wave of current towards the skitty.

Chris's eyes remained locked on the battle, his focus shifting onto Flint to see what the rock type would do next. There was definitely something more to their hard headed opponent aside from a different appearance. He was about to order Grace to take the incoming tackle and inflict a chunk of damage onto Flint when he heard Jewel call out a strange order to her partner. Discharge? The trainer didn't have to wait long to sate the curiosity about this strange technique for a geodude. He watched in shock as the enemy started to charge up sparks that only grew until Flint unleashed a surge of electricity at Grace. "So it has electric powers too… I knew there was something to this guy…” Chris muttered under his breath with a snap of his fingers. He then realized the severity of the situation at hand. With the special attack fast approaching, only one option really spoke to the hard hatted trainer. "Don't let the attack hit you Grace! Dodge!" he shouted with vigor--his expression coated with concern over just how strong of a discharge Flint sent towards his fluffy companion. If she were to get hit by that... No. Chris needed to hang tight and trust in the Skitty's abilities to evade the potential threat.

Grace's ears twitched as she heard the crackling of something unusual fast approaching. She was half expecting a close quarters fight with Flint after her little stunt, so she could only yelp in surprise when she turned to see a wave of electricity zooming towards her. The pink feline immediately sprinted forward in an attempt to outrun the attack. But by this point it was too close to do that. So Grace jumped just as the move was about to catch her in an attempt to avoid getting shocked into a jittery mess. Whether or not she would be able to dodge at this distance was up in the air.

Jewel had almost expected the dodge to come from the cat pokemon. Few people want to be struck by discharge. She had spent a good deal of time teaching it to flint, she would have to work on his aim next to make dodging harder. However, if they thought one lucky dodge was going to be enough to make her fight differently they had another thing coming. During Flint's trianing he had been forced to use discharge over a dozen times in a row, regardless off how tired it made him, and that training had taken place for several days. Jewel knew the stubborn rock type could launch another, so let's keep our enemy on their toes, she thought.

Flint, do it again. Discharge, wider spread. Remember the buoy. The skitty is the buoy. Flint nodded. That damned buoy he thought. He hated that damn targeting thing floating in the water, watching himself miss as it bobbed about. With a growl the electric rock stamped it's feet drawing forth even more of it's reserves and the latent static in the faux grass of the battle arena floor. Focusing the charge into a much wider spread this time, he unleashed another wave of energy at the pink pokemon.

Grace flew through the air with the encroaching waves of discharge hot in pursuit. Fortunately fortune favored her this time, as she managed to outpace the incoming sparks that wished to do her harm. By the time the pink feline landed onto the floor on all fours to face Flint again, the Geodude was already whirling up a second attack of the same cloth. Grace frowned at the idea of getting flayed into a big ball of electrocuted fluff, but at the same time if this was going to be a multiple attempt to get at her... She'd need to figure out a way to close the gap between them so she could get some damage in too since she lacked a projectile attack.

Chris meanwhile sighed in relief, glad that his partner managed to dodge the first discharge. Had Grace been hit with that, he may very well have just switched her out for Rover with how powerful the attack was. ...Though thinking about it now, that wouldn't do very well for him in terms of trusting the normal type to do her part in this bout of theirs. She could do this, however unlikely it seemed. He shook his head, discarding that notion for now--watching Flint rev up a second discharge. If it worked the first time... "Dodge again Grace! Don't let them think of you as an easy target!"

Grace affirmed that order with a shout of her own name, managing to pump herself up in spirit as she charged forward instead of back, jumping back and forth every few steps before attempting to leap over the incoming electrical current a second time.

Jewel may not have grown up in the city, but even in procella there had been skitty running around. She wasn't sure which ability this one had, but she did know some could cause issues with physical attacks, and so she was loathe to use one. It had no weakness to lightning, so if the move did hit, she still wouldn't be able to tell exactly which it had, but if it kept dodging her one non-physical attack, she was going to have to have to extend the length of the fight herself and tire it out. This meant using her type advantage to her favor, which also seemed to be contrary to her opponents plan, with the tail attack used before.

She smirked at her opponent, a knowing smile and a glint in her eye. Flint, Defense Curl. Let's tire this house pet out, hm? Flint nodded and crossed his arms in front of himself. He had no clue why Jewel was asking this of him, the little cats attacks barely hurt him as it was, but he knew better than to argue with her. His surface features shimmered as he concentrated his energy into a protective layer, restoring the defense that had been stolen earlier.
