WELCOME TO OKEANOS TOWN
LOCAL INFORMATION
Local Pokémon: Wingull Clamperl Buizel Slowpoke Marill
Okeanos' residential Pokémon are generally very domesticated and comfortable around humans, as all aggressive Pokémon have been driven out of town by the tourism boards. Clamperl, rarely seen in the wild, are harvested here, collected in large man-made basins and kept for their useful pearl-creating abilities. Okeanos' official bird is Wingull.
A vibrant port town, earning capital from large transport ships which service the rest of the island, Okeanos draws in gym leaders, breeders, ranchers, and researchers alike with its variety of shopping options and official -type gym. As a relatively new settlement, many inhabitants of Okeanos are foreigners from other regions, and cultural tension is often high between these newcomers and those who were originally natives of Piscari. Recently settled tourists range all the way from French immigrants to Indonesian newcomers, creating a vibrant and diverse culture that can sometimes boil over with the many cultural differences between new and old residents.

With Sam by his side Justin approached the front of the local gym, excitement in his steps to the point he was nearly bouncing along. He wore his favorite comfy clothes for just this occasion, his favorite grey and white speckled beanie, blue zip up hoodie, a pair of jeans that are so worn out that they're actually comfortable, and his dull red lace up sneakers. Sam beside him nearly slided along the ground, keeping pace easily but not nearly as excited seeming as his companion for this event.

To Sam this was his chance to fight something that wasn't the dumb pichu and his red haired friend. He wouldn't need to base his strength and worth off that electric type vermin anymore. This was the big leagues, almost literally. "We're here!" Justin announced, broad stance and staring up at the building, unsure of the etiquette involved in this matter. He felt ready, Josh had helped him feel incredibly ready for this event, but he wasn't aware of the finer points of these things.

As he thought it over Justin realized that the worst he could be is wrong, so he just went in. The way he thought it always worked was someone could just barge in and issue a challenge, but now that he thought it over he wasn't sure that real life could possibly work that way.

WILD LIFEGUARD APPEARS!

Working to keep the pools in Okeanos safe and secure, these lifeguards are Sharon's right hand people in the Gym business!

With the unseasonable cold winds and a frigid rain plaguing Okeanos Town, the pool house was quieter than normal. There was still a healthy number of locals spread throughout the dozen salt-water pools, some with children and others with their Pokemon. Quite a few seemed to be just enjoying the heated water, but many seemed to be training themselves or training their Pokemon partners. During the summer months, when tourists flocked mostly to the beach, the locals used the gym a safe haven where they could swim without being overcrowded. Luckily, those that visited the port town during this time of year, weren't looking to take a dip. Only true lovers of the water braved this nasty weather.

These pools, obviously, were not the battlefield. Toward the back of the building another large pool could be seen. It was gated off, making it impossible to get to without proper clearance, and floating islands could be spotted dispersed among the glassy surface. A Justin and Sam entered the building and made their way in, a young man in a red swim shorts with white arm bands around his toned biceps, broke away from the side of one of the pools closest to the door. Another life guard moved over to take his station. His blond hair was cut short and face clean shaven. He walked with an easy grace across the wet floor, a whistle tapping rhythmically against this chest with the movement, and offered a friendly smile. "Welcome to the Okeanos Pools! Hope your staying warm!" His brown eyes drop to the costumed Pokemon, his smile broadening. "Aren't you just adorable?" He cooed at the Pokemon before looking back to the green-haired man. "I don't recognize either of you. Are you here to swim or for a a gym badge?"

As he entered the gym itself Justin was not all too sure what to actually expect. Perhaps he expected just one huge battlefield with some backroom used as an office for paperwork, since that's all he thought of a gym as, battles and official business every once in a while. Instead he was amazed when he walked in, to find several beautiful pools filled with swimmers seeming so dedicated to a skill he'd never thought took so much intense effort. Swimming had never been considered a sport or a passion to the specialist, rather it was simply a helpful skill to be used when necessary or once in a long while for recreation. That concept was quickly blown out of the water (pun intended) by this entire community of swimmers and the large gym building dedicated to the art.

He knew going in that it was a water type gym, but looking around Justin noted that wood hammer may not be enough, and they'll most likely end up needed to train and come back to get this right. Still, there was a certain hope about it, that even if they lose they might still end up learning something or being more prepared for next time. As his blue eyes scanned the area he would land on a lifeguard greeting them, most likely a standard greeting for anyone who didn't come here and swim regularly, but a kind one none the less. Sam looked up a bit at being called cute, silent but appreciative. "We're here for a gym badge if we're lucky enough." Justin gave, an optimistic bright smile to compliment his equally bright eyes and green hair. He certainly wasn't dressed for swimming. The mimikyu was along for the ride until the battle began, looking up at the lifeguard and waiting to hear how this was going to work just as much as his trainer.

WILD LIFEGUARD APPEARS!

Working to keep the pools in Okeanos safe and secure, these lifeguards are Sharon's right hand people in the Gym business!

The lifeguard's smile broadened, proud with himself at having guessed correctly--not that it was difficult--but he had been wrong before. He flashes the pair a thumbs up, bobbing his head. "Awesome. Well, come right this way!" He lead the way between two of the pools. "Watch your step please, it can be surprisingly slippery when wet." He tossed the caution back over his shoulder. "Would suck to show up all ready for battle just to slip and have to be taken to the clinic." He commented with a chuckle. As they approached the gated off area, he tugged the key that was on a coiled key chain around his bicep down to unlock it. The swimmer held the wrought iron gate open for Justin and his Mimikyu. He gestured to the right side of the pool. "That'll be your side. It's not as wet over here, but still be careful. That pool is twenty-five feet deep." He followed the pair through the gate, closing and locking it behind him. "I'll go get the gym leader, should only be a moment. Good luck!" He gave the green-haired man a friendly smile and flashed him a thumbs up before turning and heading to the opposite end of the pool and disappearing through a doorway. On the side of the room opposite the gate were rows of stacked bleachers, currently empty. In the water were a half dozen floating islands, varying from as large as six feet in diameter to as small as just a couple. As promised, it was only a few minutes before the blond to return and take up his post at the tall life guard post planted half way down the length of the pool.

Behind the red-clad life guard came a young man who couldn't be older than nineteen. He had spiky, blue hair and an Oshawott at his side. His wide grin was apparent, even from across the room as he raised a hand in greeting. "Hello and welcome to Okeanos' Gym!" He called cheerfully, the otter Pokemon giving a wave as well. [b]"My name is Sharon and I'll be your opponent. How many Pokemon will you be using today?" He called, fingers going to the Pokeballs clipped to his belt. "That is, of course, unless you were looking to race Otterson here. The Oshawott stepped forward, little hands going to his hips as he puffed out his chest. His flat tail slapped the tiled floor as he tilted his head up proudly.

Justin was certainly appreciative of a nice sense of humor from the lifeguard. As he followed him he happily chuckled at his remarks of wasting all his effort just to slip and hurt himself. The performer knew how to be a bit light on his feet and wary, and Sam wasn't really in danger of slipping given his odd method of movement that didn't really include any kind of feet or legs to trip with. Once the two reached the pool Justin's eyes would be quickly scanning the different islands covering it, nearly ignoring further dialogue until he caught the fact that the pool was 25ft deep.

For a pool that felt nearly bottomless. The ghost specialist was intensely impressed, eyes wide for a moment before he started to move to the right side of the pool, as instructed. "You can swim, right Sam?" Justin asked a bit quietly, not wanting to seem like an absolute fool for not realizing that might be an issue. The mimikyu nodded his costume slowly, to which Justin sighed out with a newfound optimism. Their chance at winning came rushing back to a possibility, the trainer turning to the gym leader that approached. From Justin's perspective they nearly seemed like a child, good for him for leading a gym so young!

"I've only got Sam here." he replied in response to the leader's question, giving a bright smile as he waited for further instructions or questions. Honestly Justin had no idea how a gym battle was supposed to work and figured this was more of a trial run than anything else, like a test run!

Young as he was, particularly for a gym leader, Sharon Waters had a habit of taking people by surprise--a habit he had no intention of ever stopping. His brows rose ever so slightly when his challenger claimed that he only had the one Pokemon. That was unusual and he had never had someone use a Mimikyu before. Less unusual was that the man didn't introduce himself, even after Sharon had. This happened quite a bit, people nervous or so keen on the battle, all etiquette seemed to fly out the window. He also hadn't confirmed nor denied if he was looking for the alternative challenge. The leader and his Pokemon exchanged a look and Otterson shrugged. Sharon returned his eyes to the green-haired man across the pool from him. "Very well. I select Otterson as my Pokemon. What shall we call you, brave challenger?"

The Oshowatt dove into the water, swimming to swiftly to the closest island and leaping out onto like a flying fish. He flipped in the air and landed with grace. The Gym Leader turned his attention to the life guard, who stepped forward and raised his arm to call everyone to attention. "This will be a one on one battle. The battle will be over when one Pokemon is unable to continue or forfeits the match. You are allowed to use items. First move will go to the winner of the coin toss."[/color] He flipped a coin into the air, deftly catching and slapping it to the back of his other hand. After seeing the result, he flagged his arm in Justin's direction. "Heads! First move goes to the challenger."

Sharon nodded his head in acknowledgement and turned back to the specialist. "We wish you luck." In unison, both he and Otterson placed their hands on their hips and gave a slightly exaggerated nod, their movements perfectly mirroring each other as if they had practiced this.

Justin felt a bit bad that he hadn't introduced himself previously. He supposed he was a bit too wrapped up in trying to get this over with and get to the battle that he didn't really bother to do the formal introduction. "Oh! I'm Justin, pleasure to battle with you." he gave, nodding his head in a small movement as Otterson moved to one of the little islands in the pool with some definite grace and speed. The specialist was very glad that he hadn't chosen to try and race that pokemon, and had instead chosen to go his more 'signature' route, if he could claim that he had a signature anything at this point.

Sam, in rebuttle, hopped into the water and in a quick, yet not quite as quick, swim he came back up onto an island, showing an inky black mass under his costume that worked as a limb, used to get up onto one of the islands along with a small jump. Justin and Sam had no such synchronized move, mainly since they hadn't practiced but also because it was difficult without arms, or Sam moving much at all. Thankfully the gym leader gave him a short explanation of how this worked, since he had no idea and needed the knowledge for sure.

He watched the coin flip with anticipation, knowing what his first move would likely be if he were to go first. Thankfully, he did. Wood hammer seemed an obvious choice, Sam could handle the recoil with the battle only just starting, it was already a powerful move and the typing matched. "Wood hammer Sam!" he called, a bright smile on his face as he called out the move, thinking he had a chance. Of course though Sam wasn't satisfied simply dashing over and giving the opponent a wood hammer, no he dove into the pond.

Sam dove deep into the pond, hopefully deep enough the oshawott lost visual but of course as a water type he may be able to see more easily. Once he felt he was deep enough he would rocket back up to the surface, all his power into swimming back up at an angle could enough to smack the water type, giving his best swing at the pokemon's current position when he got back up, likely having a bit of airtime in order to do so.

Sharon gave a nod of his head. "It's a nice to meet you, Justin." The gym leader called back. Both he and Otterson watched as the Mimikyu flopped into the water and swam to the nearest island. It wasn't the most graceful Pokemon, but they had certainly seen worse. Mostly, the fabric of his costume dragged in the water, making it more impressive that he was still able to move like he was. Sharon wondered how much the dual type would be in the water or it was able to leap between the floating land masses--he was pretty sure the disguised Pokemon couldn't levitate. This was going to be interesting.

When the coin toss was called and his challenger's cue was given, the Mimikyu dived into the pool again, answering the teenager's early silent question. The Oshawott glanced back to his trainer, earning a small nod of his head. The otter Pokemon nodded back and face forward again, searching the water for his opponent. It was curious that the dual type took it on his own accord to jump into the water. They need to wait and see how the rest of the battle played out.

When Sam erupted from the pool, spinning through the air to slam Otterson with his tail-shaped stick, the water type braced himself to take the hit. The contact was solid, coming down on the otter's chest and causing him to skid back several inches, but it didn't seem to leave much of a mark. "Ho-oh! That's a pretty strong attack. Otterson, get some space with Aqua Jet." The water type nodded and flipped backwards into the pool. Gathering the water into a vortex, the Oshawott exploded from the surface and straight for Sam.

Looking on at the battle happening Justin felt that familiar rush of adrenaline, but stronger now. His dream was somewhat on the line here and his reputation in the world of official battling was in jeopardy if he were to fail all too much in this moment. Not that everything was a bust if they failed this one battle, there would be plenty more and tons more training to be done if they lost, that was all, but still the embarrassment and shame of it would be a bit much. Most of all Justin would feel bad because he knows that Sam can handle this if it was just up to how strong and smart he was, but it's also Justin.

The specialist had to be able to know how to instruct his pokemon accurately and quickly enough to be helpful. So, when the oshawott was able to aqua jet themselves off of Sam and actually use it as a mode of travel, Justin's eyes widened for a moment. He had never seen a tactic like that with such a specific and useful application of a move like that. Still he had to force himself to keep his excitement down and remember that the super effective attack of wood hammer barely seemed to do anything to the pokemon they were facing even though it was a direct hit. The rest of Sam's moves would probably be useless as well.

That and the new distance was going to be an issue. Quickly Justin decided to give astonish a shot as they had with Josh and Bonny. "Astonish Sam!" he gave, knowing that the chances it did what it intended were fairly small, but wanting it badly enough might be able to win them the day. The pokemon in question would become very still for a quick moment, before an awful grinding or screeching noise would emit from him nearly like a speaker. Rather than simply screaming and flinching Sam went more for a creepy thing with the move, knowing he had a bit of a mystery to him only amplified by the kinds of sounds that he was able to make under the costume.

After slamming into the Mimikyu, instead of allowing the water surrounding him to dissipate, he gathered more in a surge to send him up and over his opponents head. A well-practiced flip in the air send the water breaking apart and raining down on the island and pool. He landed deftly on the other side of the floating mass, facing Sam. He glanced to this trainer and Sharon shot him a thumbs up.

Though he was watching the battle, it was just as important to watch the trainer. If you're going to use a move that has recoil damage, it is best to use it in the beginning--especially if you have no means to regain health. Despite the attack not seeming to have done much, Justin did not look crestfallen or worried. Quick the opposite, actually, he looked pumped--elated even as the battle got into a proper swing. The other man's energy had the teenager smiling fiercely.

The racket that came from the dual type even had the people around the other pools cringing and looking over. Sharon managed not to, but only because he was use to similar sounds attacks his own team possessed--if he was being honest, which he normally was, he much preferred Dancer's melodic sound attack over this ruckus. But he couldn't deny that it got results. The Oshawott ducked his head and squeezed an eye shut, as if that would help lesson the stabbing in his ears. Once the noise died down, he shook his head to help clear it. "Same verse, same as the first, Otterson!" Sharon called, earning a nod from the otter before he back-flipped into the water again. Forming another vortex, he burst through the surface and faced toward Sam.

While Justin hadn't exactly been in a lot of battles so far in his life, he was still noticing a few signs that maybe things weren't quite going in their favor. Not that it was going to dampen his mood of how fantastic it was to have his first gym battle, but the pair of dual type and trainer seemed to be at the general disadvantage. Wood hammer hadn't done nearly as much as Justin had hoped it would, and in comparison to the damage that it does the rest of Sam's moves were practically useless. Copycat wasn't helpful when the opponent seemed to be very specialized in water attacks, and scratch was generally useless anyway.

Astonish was nice but only when it actually did what it was supposed to, and otherwise it was a waste of a turn that did nearly no damage. When Sam performed astonish Justin barely flinched. He was pretty used to that by now and was busy thinking about how they could possibly turn this around in the slightest. All he was able to come up with was another wood hammer. Sure Sam had already taken a good chunk of damage but that seemed to be the only attack that was going to do anything. It was typed right and the strongest attack they had so it seemed to be the only decent option.

"Wood hammer again Sam!" he called, smiling excitedly with an adrenaline to him. The jet of water that had slammed into his partner didn't bother him a ton. Losing on his first match was probably pretty common. Not that he very much enjoyed watching himself lose for the first time but he knew it would come eventually and that was about all there was to it. The mimikyu was again quick to maneuver, hoping himself back into the water in a bit of a backflip like jump, mimicking the movements of the oshawott and swimming towards them.

They were very aware that coming from behind probably wouldn't work twice, so they instead would pop from the water directly in front of them, getting up as much twist and force as he could with his tail shaped stick and bringing it down on the oshawott to the best of his abilities, hoping to gain the advantage.

Sharon nodded to himself as Justin instructed the Mimikyu to use another wood hammer. Even though it caused some recoil when he didn't really need to be taking additional damage, it truly was his best bet for putting a dent in Otterson's health, but to what degree would Justin allow Sam to hurt himself? That would remain to be seen. The teen folded his arms and tilted his head as he watched.

The dual type took the aqua jet with grace, managing to stay on the platform. The otter skidded to a halt himself and turned to face his opponent. The Mimikyu repeated his earlier move of back-flipping into the pool, but the veteran battler did not expect the move to be executed the exactly same way. He stayed poised and alert. When his opponent leaped from the water, the Oshawott faced the attack, taking it head on again. He allowed himself to be knocked back and into the water. "Aerial Ace, Otterson!" The gym leader called loud enough to know his Pokemon could hear him under the water.

Otterson dove deeper until he was able to flip in the water and place his feet on the bottom of the pool. With a mighty push, he shoved off the bottom and swam as quickly as he could. The otter exploded from the water and into the air where he flipped around to angle himself toward the Mimikyu and plummeted toward him.

At this point the two were fighting a battle for pure respect rather than victory. Sam was willing to go down as long as he went down with a fight, and Justin could feel how inexperienced they were compared to how experienced the gym leader was, they barely stood a chance. How wood hammer seem to be failing so badly was beyond them. A grass type attack on a water type pokemon was supposed to do a ton of damage if Justin wasn't mistaken and Sam was certainly making contact and taking some recoil. The equation simply wouldn't come together in his head but he could figure that out later.

Perhaps Sam wasn't as good as they'd both thought, but that was fixable and in fact a work in progress. This battle alone would be a fantastic step forward towards that since both of them were very much learning a lot. When the oshawott took to the sky a bit and came down on the mimikyu they again took it with a grace, sort of. This time they definitely plunged into the water but did so with what was becoming his signature backflip of sorts and then righted himself fairly fast. Finally Justin had a chance to try and gain a bit of respect or praise, since him and the mimikyu had practiced how to call out copycat a bit more sneakily, and with their high recoil move the only great option Sam expected aerial ace to be their go to here.

"Aerial ace Sam!" he would call, which they had established meant to use copycat and copy what had just occurred. This said, the mimikyu would similarly take to the skies, showing little signs of just how pained and close to the loss he was before he came back down in a carbon copy of the move just performed. The trainer and pokemon both knew they were in a losing situation but they could make the best of it now and try again some other time.

The Mimkyu had taken on severe damage by this point, but it was not easy to spot in the Pokemon's movements. Sharon supposed part of that may be his costume helping to hide things than he would have though possible. Whatever the reason, the gym leader--though young--had been doing this long enough to be confident in his calculations. Similarly, Otterson had a decent idea as well. Actually being engaged in battle gave him an advantage over his trainer. Both otter and human were impressed as the dual type took the Aerial Ace in stride, following through the force of the blow to flip back into the water.

At Justin's instructions, Sharon's brows raised. He wasn't aware that Mimikyu could learn any flying moves...and that he'd have the same one as Otterson. Something wasn't meeting the eye here. Sam burst from the water and sped toward the Oshawott. The slam caused the water type to slide across the island. At contact, the otter grabbed onto Sam's costume, holding onto it with tight fists. He was just waiting for the order for another Aerial Ace and his opponent would come on the flight with him before careening back to the island. Despite the level difference between, the Mimikyu's enthusiasm and determined had Otterson's blood pumping.

"Hold, Otterson. I've seen enough." Sharon called out to his Pokemon, his expression unreadable. The Oshawott sigh, clearly disappointed, but released the Mimikyu and gave him a friendly pat. "Good battle!" The teenager turned from his place, arms behind his back, and began the trek around the pool to get to Justin's side.

Justin had been entirely preparing himself for the sting of a defeat and a failure, waiting for this battle to end in the eventual loss no matter no good of a fight the two were putting up. The trick of calling copycat the move that they were using was simply a neat little cloak of mystery they liked to use, and never entirely expected it to be part of a decent strategy. It kept an opponent guessing what was happening until it was fairly obvious that they could copy the moves of their opponent. After all, Sam basically had 'mimic' in his name, it was his literal namesake to be able to mimic things.

When suddenly the oshawott was told to stop Justin was shocked, not calling off his pokemon for a short moment in pure confusion. "Sam, it's over." he called, confused and wondering if the leader had seen enough because he was hating how bad he was or if the younger man was done because he was impressed. The idea of not knowing was almost a bit worse than the accepting of defeat a little while ago. Both the trainer and the pokemon had a large passion for the battling they did, and were both ready to go the extra mile and not back down until it was over. So when Sam received the order that this was over, he also stood still for a second, before hoping in the pool and swimming a bit slowly back over to Justin's side.

"Thank you." the specialist would eventually respond, "You've really showed us a lot." he offered, not feeling too odd that he was talking to someone probably ten years younger than him since it was true. Justin had learned so much about battling and how intense it was from this. He was grateful as well as confused.

Sharon casually made his way around the pool, arms folded behind his back. Otterson shook his head a little at the unorthodox Mimikyu. Wasn't much on conversation or formalities, was he? But the water type did not get the impression that the dual type was trying to be rude. He was just...quirky and there was nothing wrong with that. He certainly worked well with his trainer and they both had enthusiasm for the battle.

The Oshawott dove into the water, cutting across the middle so when he leaped out, he landed next to his trainer. The pair finished closing the distance around the pool and approached their challengers. The teenager kept his face impassive as he stopped in front of Justin. Sharon and Otterson shared a long look, seemingly communicating in a way that Justin or Sam couldn't see or hear. Finally, the little otter nodded and the gym leader turned back to the older man.

"Well, it seems that me and Otterson are in agreement." He let the silence stretch for a moment, his expression remaining unreadable until a smile broke across it. He pulled his hand from behind his back and held it out, opening the fist to reveal small badge. It was shaped like three drops of water, one bigger than the last and shifting from a darker blue to a lighter one.

"Congratulations. There was, unfortunately, no way that Sam would be able to defeat Otterson, but both of you showed great partnership, strength, and ingenuity! Keep up the great work!" After being presented with the badge, the life guard removed a small bag from a box next to his station and lopped over to the them. Sharon took it from him with a nod of thanks and offered it to Justin. "And just a few other things as reward for winning your badge."
