She/Her/Her or They/Them/Their
OOC NAME >>>>
Max is an traveler from Orre with the physique and social skills of a bulldozer, who has come to Ho'ohiki to try to turn over a new leaf. She likes dogs, dark-typed dogs especially.
I stand tall 'cause I know I'm a winner.
The first thing most people notice about Max is that she's big. She stands at a towering one hundred and ninety-five centimetres (roughly six feet, five inches), and weighs one hundred and twenty-five kilograms (roughly two hundred and seventy-five pounds), making for a figure that can easily part a crowd, if only because the people in the way would rather not be run over. Her frame is thick-boned, and muscle lines her body, most prominent in her torso, abdomen, back and legs but also visible in her arms and shoulders. What bit of breast tissue and slight curve to her hips she has are often lost in clothing, making for an overall androgynous appearance, just how she likes it.
Max's skin has a distinctly bronze tone, and is marked with various scars. The most obvious ones are on her face, making her already sharp features look all the more severe with the long scar running from her right cheekbone to the corner of her mouth and the smaller one above her left brow. More cover her knuckles from times a punch has led to skin splitting on impact, as well as marks left on palms and forearms from being careless and clumsy with sharp objects in her youth. Her knees and calves have a few scars, too, and her nose is slightly crooked from a breakage.
As if she didn't already stand out enough, Max's naturally black hair is regularly bleached bone-white, shaved on the left side and grown out to shoulder-length on the right; it regularly shows dark roots, but she couldn't care less, referring to the look as 'reverse Lycanroc' when it's pointed out to her. Her eyes are the cherry on top on the sundae, as she has heterochromia, her right eye an eerily pale blue while her left eye is the deep red-brown of dried blood.
When it comes to style, Max is all about denim and leather, most of it black. At least, when she can get away with that kind of thing, since black leather isn't great for exerting herself in the middle of summer. She doesn't have any piercings, but she does have a soft spot for necklaces and bracelets, and is usually sporting some form of cheap jewelry when she goes into town. She owns a set of brass knuckles that she sometimes wears on her right hand, too, when she feels she might need them.
Knock me down, I'll just get up again.
Max is larger than life, and considers that a point of pride. Bold, blunt, and boisterous, she never hesitates in anything she does, having minimal filter between her brain and mouth and being more than happy to both hug someone she's just met and punch somebody who's rubbed her the wrong way. As a result, it's nigh-impossible for her to effectively lie or conceal her emotions, since her thoughts and feelings are out in the open before the idea of not letting them out can ever occur to her. She'll howl with laughter, roar with anger, and brood with melancholy, wearing everything on her sleeves.
That said, Max's social skills are lacking. While she doesn't hesitate to approach people, and likes being around them, she doesn't read them well. She often needs to be explicitly told what someone is feeling and why if they aren't as expressive as she is, and while not immune to sarcasm, subtle applications can be missed. She can't manipulate her way out of a paper bag beyond intimidation, which mostly just involves letting her appearance and physical strength do the work. For that reason, she tends to get along with pokemon more than humans, and has a particular soft spot for dogs.
Max also happens to be incredibly stubborn, so don't think that her not being socially adept means she's easy to sway. She needs to be in control, and while those she likes and respects have a chance at making suggestions that she'll honestly consider, more often than not it's her way or the highway. It's another reason she likes pokemon, as they're more inclined to submit to her leadership so long as she shows that she's competent, and she has no doubt at all that she is.
For as abrasive as she can potentially get, though, Max isn't a bad person, not really. She's made some bad choices, but part of her motivation for coming to Ho'ohiki was to turn over a new leaf in a new place, and she takes that seriously. She's a protective sort, wanting to use her strength to look out for people who can't look after themselves, or who at least could use a little backup. Even when she gets mean with somebody, it's sometimes part an attempt to teach them things that will keep them safe; learning how to take a punch involves getting punched, after all.
You've met your match, yeah, I'm no beginner.
Orre is a rough place. That kind of goes without saying, doesn't it? And Pyrite Town, that is the roughest part of the place. To say that Max was raised there would imply that someone was doing the raising, but she definitely grew up in Pyrite, accustomed to the earth, wind, and the tough company. With near-zero interest in school and parents who didn't care about the child they hadn't wanted anyway so long as she stayed out of their way, Max was running amok through the town from a young age.
At first, this was innocent, if dangerous, fun. She had endless energy and was growing like a weed, and so would climb anything that was remotely strong enough to support her weight and investigate anything that seemed remotely interesting. She was injured frequently in her adventures, but never enough to truly deter her.
But, as Max grew up and gathered together similar children, things got worse. By the time she was twelve, they'd all crossed over into 'public menace' territory. She was part of a roving gang of teenagers and preteens, picking fights and coming down with a severe case of sticky fingers. They took to targeting newcomers to the town, and as a number of them 'acquired' pokemon, they began challenging trainers and then intimidating or beating them up in order to get more than a fair share of victory money.
Here and there, people left to find better lives elsewhere, but Max stayed in Pyrite even after she was old enough to get kicked out of her parents' house. Her and her pokemon--she had a trio at that time, consisting of a punch-happy makuhita, a bad-tempered zubat, and a worse-tempered houndour--crashed on couches of friends who still had homes, while continuing to rule her gang as the biggest, baddest, and meanest of the lot.
Then they picked the wrong target.
Max doesn't talk about what happened. When it comes to the exact details, she doesn't remember what happened. But there was a metang involved, and she ended the fight with all valuables she'd had on her gone, more broken bones than she'd ever had in her life, and the only one of her pokemon left alive being, just barely, her houndour. And it was made clear that the next time, the owner of that metang may not be so lenient now that this town was their turf.
Is it any surprise that she left? She'd just gotten a clear message that her path in life was almost certainly a dead end, with emphasis on 'dead,' and gotten a harsh and bloody look at what she could become if she did survive, from the receiving end. The hospital stay gave her plenty of time for her to think, and so she gathered up what of her ill-gotten money she had left once her injuries had healed and took off for Phenac City. Spending some time there, with the suspicious looks from everyone who learned where she'd come from, and Orre in general started to feel like a lost cause for her.
As for how she decided to come to Ho'ohiki specifically, well, there's no grand story there. She looked at all of the regions that didn't seem worse-off than Orre was, and that she could afford to travel to, she gathered their names, and she threw a dart.
Now, stepping off of a boat in Okeanos Town, Max is starting over. This time, she's going to do this pokemon trainer thing right, if she can figure out how.
Gotta catch 'em all!
