WELCOME TO UBERRIME CITY
LOCAL INFORMATION
Local Pokémon: Pidove Pichu Elekid Helioptile Pawniard
With cities come pests, and Uberrime has its fair share of annoyingly domesticated Pokémon. Pichu and Elekid form strange social packs, working together to rifle through the bits and pieces left outside of diners and cafes. Helioptile, originally introduced to feed on the massive Pichu infestation, are now just as big of a nuisance, sunning themselves on the stone sidewalks and occasionally snacking on the overweight Pidove that flock to Uberrime. Pawniard trained by the local branch of Rangers work to keep crime - at least, the obvious kind - to a minimum. Uberrime's official bird is Pidove.
The very definition of opulence, Uberrime is packed to the brim with shining metal buildings, bustling shopping centers, and the latest in technology from researchers around the island - and even from other regions. Far and away the most advanced city for miles, Uberrime boasts a multi-story gym, highlighting Steel and Electric-type Pokémon, along with an alternative route through which those less inclined to fight can answer puzzling questions to advance. Those with scientific interests will be right at home, especially researchers, who will no doubt find work in any field they please. Breeders, however, may find themselves up a proverbial stream without a proverbial paddle, as Uberrime's population is inundated with the latest in pure blooded oddities and attractive award-winning Pokémon. Oddly, Uberrime seems to have no discernible culture, nor has it ever...

Scrap kept her breathing as steady as she could, even with her pulse increasing a bit. She'd managed to follow one of the vans with the Golden Ratatta on the side into a closed parking garage. She was hiding behind one of the large concrete pillars and there were two guys talking. The girl silently cursed them, wishing they'd just get on with it. She had her phone out and flipped open, camera ready. She had her dark knit hat pulled down over her head, making it harder to spot the blond halo of hair in the dimness. Bones was chilling in her pack, ready to leap out if she needed and Scratch had slunk off to another part of the floor to keep her from getting sneaked up on. When it seemed they were done chit-chatting like a bunch of high school girls, Scrap got ready, lifted her phone so she could see what it was taking pictures of and peeked out from behind the pillar.

The driver she had followed was just about to open the back of the van when Scrap, shifting in her eagerness, knocked over a fast food cup she hadn't seen at the corner of her cover. She looked down with startled eyes, then back up to see through her camera that the two guys were staring at her. "Shit." She hissed to herself as she turned to bolt. The waif heard shouts from behind her as she ran for the stairs, a blur of purple streak joining her confirmed that the Purrloin was with her again. Her breaths came out in white puffs in the frigid air. When she heard them in the stairwell behind her, she start jumping the last two or three steps. Scrap was sure if she got enough of a head start they'd either give up or she'd lose them.

She already felt the relief flooding her when she exited the stairwell and spotted the street through the exit. Scrap ran as fast as her legs would carry her out the building and made a sharp left, her shoes sliding on the compact snow of the sidewalk, but she kept her feet. Unfortunately, as she had made the turn, she'd taken the moment to throw a glance back at the stairwell and didn't see that the direction she turned put her colliding with impressive force into a stranger's legs after only a couple of sprinting steps. The child was knocked back, her phone flying from her hand to skid to a stop between the stranger's legs and she fell back on her butt. "Hell...." The blow only stunned her for a moment before her aqua eyes flew open. She looked up at the stranger, back to the garage, and then to the stranger again, panic beginning to take hold. Keep your cool. You can't think if you're worked up. She repeated Liam's words in her head. She could hear the pounding footsteps drawing closer.

Scrap flashed a smile to the man she'd collided with. "Hey, Papa! Sorry I'm late." She said with loud, child-like enthusiasm. She pushed herself to her feet, forcing herself to take his hand and fall in next to him just as the two men slid from the exit. Unlike her, they came to a stop, looking surprised at seeing an adult. The driver glared at her. She tightened her grip on his hand and took a half step behind him, wishing, hoping, praying that he'd play along. It could be the only thing she got for Christmas and she'd be okay with that.

Well. This was certainly turning out far worse than he had ever expected. He had spent weeks planning this operation - gathering information, learning about the target, creating a careful timetable - all for nothing. An absolute waste of time.

The store was out of it. Carlton couldn't believe it, the beauty store was out of the Christmas present he had spent the better part of a month finding for his younger sister. She had mentioned wanting something called a eyeshadow palette, whatever the hell that was. And, of course, Eliza wouldn't be satisfied by some off brand piece of shit. No, she had to ask for one of the most expensive kinds, something that usually cost upwards of $50 dollars - a waste of money in his opinion. And, on top of all that, the brand was called NAKED. Carlton Shaw was a man who hardly ever felt uncomfortable, but he certainly did not feel right buying something called NAKED for his baby sister.

Luckily, he had been able to find a store that was selling the thing at less than half price, a fact that had caused him no small amount of relief. Carlton couldn't justify spending over fifty dollars on a piece of makeup, but he could swallow spending twenty. Unfortunately, it seemed like most people'd had the same idea.

So here he was. Standing in a store filled with things he knew nothing about, with a game plan that meant absolutely nothing. He would just have to go back home and try finding some other present to give Eliza. Because she deserved more than the world, she deserved everything.

As a child Carlton never celebrated Christmas, it just wasn't something you did with his father around. Lewis thought it was a waste of time and money to celebrate any holiday in any form, meaning that the Shaws went without more often than not. When he took over care of Eliza, Carlton swore he would do whatever was in his power to make her life as different as possible from his own. And that included Christmas. It wasn't easy as a twenty something year, balancing two completely separate lives (one of a criminal and one of a father), but he made it work as best he could.

Well, he could always just resort to getting something sent from the internet. Or find a cheap knock off that would work just as well, no matter how much Eliza complained.

With a sigh Carlton pulled his heavy winter coat closer around himself, taking one last look at the disappointment of the store before turning around to leave. At least the trip hadn't been for nothing, the store did have the curling iron that the teenager had mentioned wanting a few weeks ago. As he exited through the automatic doors he was met with a burst of cold air, a welcome relief from the stuffy heat of the store. The thief had always preferred the cold, going so far as to keep his house at around 68 degrees year round. Eliza hated it, but that was what blankets were for. Akin and Finn certainly appreciated the cooler temperatures though, especially during the oppressive heat of summer.

The ice specialist was just about to turn left to find his motorcycle in the store's parking lot when something small and, for it's size, surprisingly strong rammed into his legs. Carlton couldn't help but let out a small "ooh" as he attempted to regain his balance, all the while looking down at what had accosted him.

Well, at first glance this kid didn't seem to be much. However, he knew that looks were hardly an appropriate judge of character - you couldn't survive so long in his chosen line of work without realizing that quickly. Although the girl was dressed from head to toe in ragged and worn clothing, there was something about her that intrigued him. This wasn't your average, run of the mill street rat.

And, within a few seconds, he was proven correct with that statement.

Very few things surprised Carlton. He liked to think that he always had a firm grasp on every situation he landed himself in, a skill that had saved his life more times than he could count. However, he would be the first to admit that having the small girl smile, grab his hand, and call him Papa had certainly not been what he had been expecting. The only person that ever initiated contact with him was Eliza, and hers was a far more cuddly and clinging type of physicality, one that he had learned over the years to ignore as best he could. And she certainly never called him Papa, at least not since she was a toddler and confused about the role her older brother was suddenly playing in her life.

But with a quick look around, he suddenly understood what was going on, at least to a small degree.

The look in the eyes of those two men made his stomach sick. Yes, there was a time and place for violence when one was a criminal, Carlton would be the first to admit that. He didn't particularly enjoy roughing someone up or taking a life, but occasionally it was necessary. However, there was no reason - absolutely none - to turn that violence toward a child.

Carlton's hands clenched tightly around the girl's and, without thinking, he pushed her further behind himself. This probably wasn't going to be pretty, and thankfully it seemed that at this time of day the shopping center was empty. Less collateral damage. And, not for the first time, the thief's habit of always packing heat might pay off.

"I was worried sick about you!" Carlton exclaimed, looking down at the small human being with a soft expression on his face. Getting into character was easy, all he had to do was remember how worried he always was when he lost sight of Eliza in crowded areas. "Next time try to be on time, alright sweetie?" As he glanced at their unwanted company, he couldn't help but let his sarcastic and bored drawl overtake his voice. "And did you want something gentlemen? My daughter and I are on a fairly strict timetable, I'm afraid. So as much as we would love to, we don't have time to make any new friends."

Relief flooded Scrap when the man's hand tightened around her own--not something she ever thought she'd feel in that situation--and he pulled her closer to him. So far, so good. She just had to pray that this guy wasn't actually a worse low-life than these two bozos. She tore her ocean blue eyes away from the men who were still looking at her suspiciously to smile sheepishly up at her 'papa'. She reached up with her free hand to brush aside her bangs that were getting too long. "Sorry, I was just following a kitty!" As if on cue, Scratch trotted out of the parking garage, loping across the street and disappearing into the alley on the other side. "See? Wasn't it pretty?"

She almost flinched at being called 'daughter', but managed to hold it back. She had raised her voice in pitch, making it very clear she was girl, but hadn't put too much thought into it. It was best really, for him to know she was a girl. Adults--particularly men--were much more likely to help a girl over a boy, usually assuming the girl was more helpless and that boys were just making trouble. It made her feel insecure, knowing they knew, but she'd have to deal with it later. The driver narrowed his eyes at her and she resisted the urge to stick her tongue out at him. It was hard to tell under the coats, but it wasn't obvious that if these two decided to rumble, that the man who was trying to help her would be able to take them. They were suspicious, naturally. She felt another rush of relief and gratitude for her new coat. It made it harder to see that she was a street kid, but the trained eye would still see the tears in the pants, the worn shoes, grubby skin in the few places it showed, and dull golden locks peeking out from under her knitted hat.

Finally, the tension broke as the other man laid a hand on the driver's shoulder. "No, not at all. We just thought she was lost, didn't mean to scare her." His eyes shifted to Scrap's. "Shouldn't wander into dangerous places." His voice was low and held an edge to it. She stared back at him, raising her chin a little in defiance. The man barked a laugh, grabbing the driver's sleeve and pulling him back to the parking garage. "Merry Christmas!" Scrap called after them, waving a hand. Once she was sure they were gone, she released the man's hand and reached down to scoop up her phone, if he'd let her.
