WELCOME TO UBERRIME CITY
LOCAL INFORMATION
Local Pokémon: Pidove Pichu Elekid Helioptile Pawniard
With cities come pests, and Uberrime has its fair share of annoyingly domesticated Pokémon. Pichu and Elekid form strange social packs, working together to rifle through the bits and pieces left outside of diners and cafes. Helioptile, originally introduced to feed on the massive Pichu infestation, are now just as big of a nuisance, sunning themselves on the stone sidewalks and occasionally snacking on the overweight Pidove that flock to Uberrime. Pawniard trained by the local branch of Rangers work to keep crime - at least, the obvious kind - to a minimum. Uberrime's official bird is Pidove.
The very definition of opulence, Uberrime is packed to the brim with shining metal buildings, bustling shopping centers, and the latest in technology from researchers around the island - and even from other regions. Far and away the most advanced city for miles, Uberrime boasts a multi-story gym, highlighting Steel and Electric-type Pokémon, along with an alternative route through which those less inclined to fight can answer puzzling questions to advance. Those with scientific interests will be right at home, especially researchers, who will no doubt find work in any field they please. Breeders, however, may find themselves up a proverbial stream without a proverbial paddle, as Uberrime's population is inundated with the latest in pure blooded oddities and attractive award-winning Pokémon. Oddly, Uberrime seems to have no discernible culture, nor has it ever...

Scrap kept her breathing as steady as she could, even with her pulse increasing a bit. She'd managed to follow one of the vans with the Golden Ratatta on the side into a closed parking garage. She was hiding behind one of the large concrete pillars and there were two guys talking. The girl silently cursed them, wishing they'd just get on with it. She had her phone out and flipped open, camera ready. She had her dark knit hat pulled down over her head, making it harder to spot the blond halo of hair in the dimness. Bones was chilling in her pack, ready to leap out if she needed and Scratch had slunk off to another part of the floor to keep her from getting sneaked up on. When it seemed they were done chit-chatting like a bunch of high school girls, Scrap got ready, lifted her phone so she could see what it was taking pictures of and peeked out from behind the pillar.

The driver she had followed was just about to open the back of the van when Scrap, shifting in her eagerness, knocked over a fast food cup she hadn't seen at the corner of her cover. She looked down with startled eyes, then back up to see through her camera that the two guys were staring at her. "Shit." She hissed to herself as she turned to bolt. The waif heard shouts from behind her as she ran for the stairs, a blur of purple streak joining her confirmed that the Purrloin was with her again. Her breaths came out in white puffs in the frigid air. When she heard them in the stairwell behind her, she start jumping the last two or three steps. Scrap was sure if she got enough of a head start they'd either give up or she'd lose them.

She already felt the relief flooding her when she exited the stairwell and spotted the street through the exit. Scrap ran as fast as her legs would carry her out the building and made a sharp left, her shoes sliding on the compact snow of the sidewalk, but she kept her feet. Unfortunately, as she had made the turn, she'd taken the moment to throw a glance back at the stairwell and didn't see that the direction she turned put her colliding with impressive force into a stranger's legs after only a couple of sprinting steps. The child was knocked back, her phone flying from her hand to skid to a stop between the stranger's legs and she fell back on her butt. "Hell...." The blow only stunned her for a moment before her aqua eyes flew open. She looked up at the stranger, back to the garage, and then to the stranger again, panic beginning to take hold. Keep your cool. You can't think if you're worked up. She repeated Liam's words in her head. She could hear the pounding footsteps drawing closer.

Scrap flashed a smile to the man she'd collided with. "Hey, Papa! Sorry I'm late." She said with loud, child-like enthusiasm. She pushed herself to her feet, forcing herself to take his hand and fall in next to him just as the two men slid from the exit. Unlike her, they came to a stop, looking surprised at seeing an adult. The driver glared at her. She tightened her grip on his hand and took a half step behind him, wishing, hoping, praying that he'd play along. It could be the only thing she got for Christmas and she'd be okay with that.

Well. This was certainly turning out far worse than he had ever expected. He had spent weeks planning this operation - gathering information, learning about the target, creating a careful timetable - all for nothing. An absolute waste of time.

The store was out of it. Carlton couldn't believe it, the beauty store was out of the Christmas present he had spent the better part of a month finding for his younger sister. She had mentioned wanting something called a eyeshadow palette, whatever the hell that was. And, of course, Eliza wouldn't be satisfied by some off brand piece of shit. No, she had to ask for one of the most expensive kinds, something that usually cost upwards of $50 dollars - a waste of money in his opinion. And, on top of all that, the brand was called NAKED. Carlton Shaw was a man who hardly ever felt uncomfortable, but he certainly did not feel right buying something called NAKED for his baby sister.

Luckily, he had been able to find a store that was selling the thing at less than half price, a fact that had caused him no small amount of relief. Carlton couldn't justify spending over fifty dollars on a piece of makeup, but he could swallow spending twenty. Unfortunately, it seemed like most people'd had the same idea.

So here he was. Standing in a store filled with things he knew nothing about, with a game plan that meant absolutely nothing. He would just have to go back home and try finding some other present to give Eliza. Because she deserved more than the world, she deserved everything.

As a child Carlton never celebrated Christmas, it just wasn't something you did with his father around. Lewis thought it was a waste of time and money to celebrate any holiday in any form, meaning that the Shaws went without more often than not. When he took over care of Eliza, Carlton swore he would do whatever was in his power to make her life as different as possible from his own. And that included Christmas. It wasn't easy as a twenty something year, balancing two completely separate lives (one of a criminal and one of a father), but he made it work as best he could.

Well, he could always just resort to getting something sent from the internet. Or find a cheap knock off that would work just as well, no matter how much Eliza complained.

With a sigh Carlton pulled his heavy winter coat closer around himself, taking one last look at the disappointment of the store before turning around to leave. At least the trip hadn't been for nothing, the store did have the curling iron that the teenager had mentioned wanting a few weeks ago. As he exited through the automatic doors he was met with a burst of cold air, a welcome relief from the stuffy heat of the store. The thief had always preferred the cold, going so far as to keep his house at around 68 degrees year round. Eliza hated it, but that was what blankets were for. Akin and Finn certainly appreciated the cooler temperatures though, especially during the oppressive heat of summer.

The ice specialist was just about to turn left to find his motorcycle in the store's parking lot when something small and, for it's size, surprisingly strong rammed into his legs. Carlton couldn't help but let out a small "ooh" as he attempted to regain his balance, all the while looking down at what had accosted him.

Well, at first glance this kid didn't seem to be much. However, he knew that looks were hardly an appropriate judge of character - you couldn't survive so long in his chosen line of work without realizing that quickly. Although the girl was dressed from head to toe in ragged and worn clothing, there was something about her that intrigued him. This wasn't your average, run of the mill street rat.

And, within a few seconds, he was proven correct with that statement.

Very few things surprised Carlton. He liked to think that he always had a firm grasp on every situation he landed himself in, a skill that had saved his life more times than he could count. However, he would be the first to admit that having the small girl smile, grab his hand, and call him Papa had certainly not been what he had been expecting. The only person that ever initiated contact with him was Eliza, and hers was a far more cuddly and clinging type of physicality, one that he had learned over the years to ignore as best he could. And she certainly never called him Papa, at least not since she was a toddler and confused about the role her older brother was suddenly playing in her life.

But with a quick look around, he suddenly understood what was going on, at least to a small degree.

The look in the eyes of those two men made his stomach sick. Yes, there was a time and place for violence when one was a criminal, Carlton would be the first to admit that. He didn't particularly enjoy roughing someone up or taking a life, but occasionally it was necessary. However, there was no reason - absolutely none - to turn that violence toward a child.

Carlton's hands clenched tightly around the girl's and, without thinking, he pushed her further behind himself. This probably wasn't going to be pretty, and thankfully it seemed that at this time of day the shopping center was empty. Less collateral damage. And, not for the first time, the thief's habit of always packing heat might pay off.

"I was worried sick about you!" Carlton exclaimed, looking down at the small human being with a soft expression on his face. Getting into character was easy, all he had to do was remember how worried he always was when he lost sight of Eliza in crowded areas. "Next time try to be on time, alright sweetie?" As he glanced at their unwanted company, he couldn't help but let his sarcastic and bored drawl overtake his voice. "And did you want something gentlemen? My daughter and I are on a fairly strict timetable, I'm afraid. So as much as we would love to, we don't have time to make any new friends."

Relief flooded Scrap when the man's hand tightened around her own--not something she ever thought she'd feel in that situation--and he pulled her closer to him. So far, so good. She just had to pray that this guy wasn't actually a worse low-life than these two bozos. She tore her ocean blue eyes away from the men who were still looking at her suspiciously to smile sheepishly up at her 'papa'. She reached up with her free hand to brush aside her bangs that were getting too long. "Sorry, I was just following a kitty!" As if on cue, Scratch trotted out of the parking garage, loping across the street and disappearing into the alley on the other side. "See? Wasn't it pretty?"

She almost flinched at being called 'daughter', but managed to hold it back. She had raised her voice in pitch, making it very clear she was girl, but hadn't put too much thought into it. It was best really, for him to know she was a girl. Adults--particularly men--were much more likely to help a girl over a boy, usually assuming the girl was more helpless and that boys were just making trouble. It made her feel insecure, knowing they knew, but she'd have to deal with it later. The driver narrowed his eyes at her and she resisted the urge to stick her tongue out at him. It was hard to tell under the coats, but it wasn't obvious that if these two decided to rumble, that the man who was trying to help her would be able to take them. They were suspicious, naturally. She felt another rush of relief and gratitude for her new coat. It made it harder to see that she was a street kid, but the trained eye would still see the tears in the pants, the worn shoes, grubby skin in the few places it showed, and dull golden locks peeking out from under her knitted hat.

Finally, the tension broke as the other man laid a hand on the driver's shoulder. "No, not at all. We just thought she was lost, didn't mean to scare her." His eyes shifted to Scrap's. "Shouldn't wander into dangerous places." His voice was low and held an edge to it. She stared back at him, raising her chin a little in defiance. The man barked a laugh, grabbing the driver's sleeve and pulling him back to the parking garage. "Merry Christmas!" Scrap called after them, waving a hand. Once she was sure they were gone, she released the man's hand and reached down to scoop up her phone, if he'd let her.

Carlton could barely suppress a bark of laughter at lie the kid came up with. Getting distracted by a pretty kitty his ass. Everyone, especially the thugs across the street, knew what a bunch of crap that line was, but at least no one seemed to be challenging the girl on it. "I suppose it was pretty, but not pretty enough to be a reason to get lost," he replied, knowing full well he was getting far too much into character. He just couldn't help it, he missed Eliza being young - those had been some amazing years. Hopefully soon (but not too soon) she could find a nice boy and give him some nieces and nephews for him to spoil rotten.

At the mention of not wanting to scare the girl he couldn't hold it in any longer, a burst of laughter erupted from his mouth. "Of course he weren't," he drawled, letting a lazy smirk spread across his face. "Now hurry on your way, we have things to get to."

Once the coast was clear he released the kid's hand and bent down to her level. "Are you alright?" he asked, dropping the condescending drawl that usually accompanied his voice. "They didn't hurt you or anything?" If they had, there would be hell to pay. Carlton had an uncanny ability to recognize faces - he would be able to find those thugs again and teach them a lesson. Probably one that involved a few broken bones. From his own experience, those were the only ones that left a lasting impression.

What a stupid day to have left Akin and Finn behind with Eliza. Sure, she didn't have any Pokemon of her own yet and he hated to leave her unprotected in such unfamiliar territory, but he should have at least brought his Cubchoo with him. It was a miracle that encounter hadn't turned out worse, and he would have been the fool who only had a gun to defend himself and a kid with. Who knew what kind of monsters their antagonists had had hidden in Pokeballs. Criminals like those punks usually had completely unsavory Pokemon to match their own despicable personalities. Maybe it was time to get Eliza a Pokemon of her own for Christmas. Or at least an egg.

Scrap was relieved when he released her hand, even if part of her knew he would have little reason to hold onto it--but the reasons were all bad ones. When she stood up from retrieving her phone, the man was leaning down so his eyes caught her aquamarine ones easily. She blinked at his question, taken aback by the sincerity and concern in his tone. This could be a good or bad thing. She flipped the phone closed and shoved it into the pocket her coat. "Pft. Yeah. I'm fine. Never touched me." She said dismissively with a wave of her other hand. Despite him having helped her and being nice, she felt distinctly uncomfortable when him knowing she was girl--at least, she was pretty sure he knew when he called her 'daughter.'

The Purrloin that had pranced from the parking garage slipped back out onto the street and trotted over. She rubbed against Scrap's legs, flashing an emerald, warning glare to the guy standing awfully close to her girl. Sure, the guy had just helped, but would be the first time someone insisted on being repaid for their efforts. Scratch would slice him to ribbons and feed him to Bones. The girl rocked on her feet a little, starting to feel antsy. "Um..thanks for your help." The street kid took a step back from him, ready to turn to go about her day and think back on how she should have done things differently back there. Maybe she would let Trip out of his ball for a little bit for some bonding and training.

Carlton could tell the kid was getting antsy, though it wasn't much of a surprise. Kids like this, who obviously had a rough life (unless his observations and instincts were completely wrong, this girl seemed to have an even rougher childhood than he had had) were slow to accept help - especially when their backs were up against the wall. In the back of his mind he could hear Eliza lecturing him to take the kid somewhere and fill her up with warm and hearty food, and to make sure she had a place to stay, particularly due to how cold the nights were getting here in Uberrime. But his sister, with all of her good intentions, was completely naive.

You couldn't offer something like that to these children out of the blue, they would bolt at the first opportunity. Arcues knew he always had when he had been in their position thirty years ago. One had to be subtle about these things. "Alright, if you're sure about that, kid," he replied, keeping his eyes trained on the Purrloin as it moved closer. It never was a good idea to let one's guard down around these feral type cats. He had learned that lesson many times over throughout the years.

All of a sudden an idea popped into his head. He couldn't outright demand to know if this kid had a place to stay and food to eat, but there were ways to make sure those basic necessities were indeed taken care of, all the while remaining chill.

He couldn't help but chuckle a little bit at his own pun while he straightened up. "I was just on my way to this diner around the corner, you want something to eat?" Carlton asked, taking a few steps back to give the kid a bit of distance. "Those men might still be around, after all. They seemed the persistent type - ones who are too stupid to know when to quit." Now that she did have a head start this kid was probably intelligent enough to know how to keep out of trouble, but didn't mean he couldn't be worried about her safety.

Scrap was preparing to leave, careful to not put her back to him but also be wary of the building the thugs disappeared into, when the man spoke up about food. She watched as he took a couple steps back, appreciating the space he created for her. The savvy way he spoke to her and the non-threatening posture he took suggested he was not unfamiliar with dealing with street kids. This was either a good thing or a very bad thing, she hadn't decided which.

Food sounded...great, honestly. She couldn't help the wary glance to the parking garage when he brought up those men again. Scrap was fairly sure they just went back to their business or decided to move to a location that hadn't been compromised. But if they were waiting to follow her? The waif looked down to the Purrloin for her input. The dark type regarded the man for a long moment before peering up at her girl and mewling. Scrap nodded and returned her aqua gaze to Carlton's. "Okay, sure." She agreed, but there was an edge to her voice that said she'd be gone in a moment if things got strange.

Scrap took a step closer to him, waiting for him to lead the way, when an excited sound came from her pack. She looked back over her shoulder at the wiggling fabric and laughed. "Yes, Bones, we're getting food." A few seconds passed and the flap of her backpack was pushed up by the mostly bald head of a Vullaby. The dual type's beady eyes found Carlton, looking at him with uncertain skepticism--she knew she should be suspicious, but she very much wanted to eat. "This is Bones, by the way. She's Scratch and you can call me Scrap." The girl offered before tilting her head at him. "What's your name?"

Carlton had to admit, he was surprised when the kid accepted his offer. He had been expecting to either have his suggestion of food be refused or to just see the back of the girl as she ran as fast as she could away from him. Not that he was upset about this outcome, far from it. It would ease his conscious to know that she would at least have one hearty and hot meal today. And it wasn't because he was a bleeding heart or whatever shit Eliza liked to say.

He just didn't want to see a kid go hungry. Any decent person, and even a few indecent ones, would do the same.

At the excited sound the Vullaby made the criminal let out another small laugh. Well, it seemed like he'd be needing to feed two hungry looking Pokemon as well. Hopefully they didn't eat as much as Akin. But then again, it was nearly impossible to eat as much as that chubby Cubchoo. It was probably time to put her on a diet, though getting Eliza to agree to stop feeding her Pokesnacks would be the difficult part.

"Nice to meet you Scrap. Name's Carlton, and now that the introductions are out of the way, how about we go get some food. I've been craving chili for too fuc- freaking long," he said before turning around and starting to walk in the direction of the diner.

Scrap tilted her head back and laughed at Carlton curbing his language. "You can say fuck." She stated bluntly, falling into step next to him, as she snickered. "Unless like...you're trying to make yourself more wholesome or some shit." Her tone showed she didn't think much of that, but it was his life--he could do what he wanted. The Purrloin walked between the man and her girl, but it didn't escape her notice that Scrap kept less distance between herself and the stranger than what she use to do with men she didn't know. It was...good, she supposed, but it made her worry that the girl was become lax with her caution. A combination of feeling too safe now that they actually had some security and cockiness from doing more and more risky things without repercussions. They were going to need to talk about it.

It was like the blond could hear her Pokemon's thoughts and she glanced down to the Scratch, her brow quirked. "What is it, Scratch?" The purple feline gave a dismissive flick of her tail. "Not right now. We'll talk later." The girl shrugged in response, turning her aqua eyes back to Carlton. "Do you have Pokemon?" She asked, demonstrating that even though she was very different from normal kids, she still possessed the same curiosity.

He had been right when he said the place wasn't far. She recognized it, from her many, endless trips through the streets and alleys of the large city. The waif had never been in, but it smelled great and she'd yet to find a food she hated.

Wholesome was not something Carlton had ever been called before, and it threw him off for a few seconds. Though, he had to admit, that was exactly what he had been doing when he censored himself in front of this kid - he had been trying to be wholesome, or as wholesome as a guy like him could be. "I'll keep that in mind kid," he drawled, letting a lazy smile spread across his face.

As they walked through the doors of the diner, the thief couldn't help but let out a small chuckle at the mention of Pokemon. Of course that would be something a preteen kid would focus on, especially one that seemed to surround herself with Pokemon constantly. If only he'd thought to bring Akin and Finn with him today, instead of leaving them back with Eliza at the hotel room. "I have two, right now, and have my mind on grabbing a third one soon. They're all ice types, of course. I like to keep things cool." This kid didn't need to know that for his third Pokemon he was currently planning a heist to break out the homicidal Smoochum from the Uberrime Shelter.

This diner certainly had been a good idea - it didn't mind it's clients allowing their creatures, as long as they were a reasonable size, to wander around out of a Pokeball, which was good news for Scrap, who didn't seem to utilize the containment devices.

"Alright kid, what'd you want?" Carlton asked once they were situated in a booth near the back of the restaurant, as far away from prying eyes as possible. While he certainly wasn't doing anything illegal, the ice specialist still felt wary being in public - plus it was always better to be hyper vigilant, rather than careless and sloppy. "Like I said, I'll be going for the chili. But pick whatever you want. And whatever your Pokes want too."

Scrap looked thoughtful at Carlton's answer about his Pokemon after she snorted at his 'cool' joke. "I don't think I've met an ice type before..." She certainly couldn't recall any Pokemon she'd dealt with being such, but her education as far as such things was just as lacking as all the rest. Once again, Scratch spoke up. "Bootsie is an ice type." The blonde looked down at the Purrloin in surprise. "Bootsie is a dark type." She said, but there was a questions inflection in her tone. The cat nodded. "And ice. Sneasals are dual types, like Bones." Scrap looked as though realization hit her and she looked back up to the older thief. "Nevermind. I've met a Sneasal, she is so cool! Her claws were like carving knives!" She commented with child-like enthusiasm as she gave a little bounce on her feet.

The would-be boy followed Carlton into the diner and to a table. She slid her backpack off and set it on the bench across from her savoir. Hopping up into the seat, she slid the bag deeper along the bench until was against the wall and pulled the flap back for Bones' head to stick out. The Vullaby wiggled excitedly, the lucky egg charm around her neck bouncing with the movement. Scratch sat herself on the other side of her girl. The restaurant was warm, so it didn't take long for her pull off her knitted cap, her blond hair mussed from the cap and a little fly-aways sticking up from the static. The girl ran a hand through the pale locks, helping them look a bit less scraggly--it was getting time to wash them again.

Scrap picked up the menu and glanced over it, very glad that there were pictures. She could read a little, able to work out how something is pronounced (if it's phonetic) and hopefully it matched a word in her vocabulary. But even with that, she didn't know what some of these things were. She tried not to let her confusion show as she set the plastic covered sheet back down. "Is chili warm? If so we'll have that." She'd never had it before and name sounded like it might NOT be warm. She just had to hope that this guy wasn't completely crazy and wanted hot food in his belly, even if he liked ice types. When the waitress came by, the child looked uncertain, as if expecting to get told to leave, but when she simply asked for their drink order, she asked for water--Scratch wouldn't let her have soda. ("Maybe once you're in a better state of hydration, hm?")

Carlton knew that, objectively, it made sense that this kid had rarely seen ice types before. They were, after all, not the most popular to own or train, let along specialize in. Not only were they victim to a lot of type weaknesses, but it was incredibly difficult to take proper care of them (something that caught a lot of new trainers off guard). Sure, a Cubchoo or Mamoswine or Avalugg could survive in warm climates, but they would never be able to thrive - never be able to reach their full potential. Even Smoochums, like the one he had his eyes on, didn't do well in heat.

Raising one of these creatures took an immense amount of effort if one lived in hotter areas, and it annoyed the thief to no end when he saw people carting around Alolan Vulpixes as if they were exactly the same as their Kanto counterparts.

"Sneasels are incredibly cool, you're right kid. I have one myself - and he's particularly fond of those "carving knives" he has on the end of his hands," he said with a small chuckle, delighted that Scrap was at least capable of getting excited about some things. Although he had absolutely no proof of this (besides her rough appearance and confusion over something as simple as chili), Carlton was almost 100% percent convinced she was living on her own - something that tended to break the spirit of anyone who wasn't tough enough. "And yeah, don't worry. Chili is just a misleading name. Though I guess they had to go with that, since calling it Hotie would lead to a whole lot of misunderstandings."

As the girl ordered a water, he couldn't help but raise one eyebrow in surprise. Since when would a kid pass their nose up at something carbonated and sweet? After giving his order to the waitress (a chocolate milkshake - you couldn't beat the classics) he leaned back in the booth and turned once more to give husband full attention to Scrap. "I don't have either of my Pokemon with me today, or I'd show you them both - not that they're too exciting. My Cubchoo, Akin, spends every waking minute trying to shovel food down his throat while my Sneasel Finn prefers to spend his time stealing and hoarding shiny things. Terrors, the both of them."

Oh, and he had that random egg he'd recently acquired through somewhat questionable means, but he had no idea what was even in that thing. So it wasn't worth bringing it up to the kid.

Scrap's expression brightened when Carlton commented on having a Sneasel, the excitement clear in her turquoise eyes. "That is so awesome. Where did you get him?" Unlike some children--and even adults--there was no envy or jealously in her tone or face. While she had thought before she would might like to have a Sneasel on her team, she seemed honestly happy for him to have the pleasure of one. Trips had said she got Bootsie from another region, but that they preferred snow mountains. On her trek from Piscari to Uberrime, the street kid had avoided the white tipped peeks on the horizon and opted to head west toward the ocean front and, ultimately, here.

His joke about calling chili 'hotie' and leading to misunderstandings earned him a quirked pale brow from the thief. She looked baffled for a moment before something seeming dawned on her. "Ohhh...you mean how some people call other people 'hotties' when they want hook up?" It was difficult to tell if she knew what it mean to 'hook up', but she certainly spoke like the situation was not unheard of to her. She nodded. "Yeah, I can see that. Let's stick with chili." As if they could get everyone to start calling it something else if they wanted to.

Scrap's blond brows disappeared into her bangs when the man ordered a milkshake with his dinner. Who was the kid here? Then again, Pyroar always had candy in his office he munched on. The comparison had a smile tugging at the corner of her lips. The girl snorted as Carlton described his Pokemon. "Bones eats anything too and as often as she can, so they'd get along." The kid couldn't help but laugh about Finn. "I think Finn and I would get along great." She liked shiny things too, but mostly because they usually sold for more.

When the waitress came with their drinks and food, she smiled at both before looking to Carlton. "Can I get you or your daughter anything else?" The word nearly made Scrap flinch. Sure, she had stopped pretending to be a boy during her encounter with Carlton, but that was only to increase the odds that he would help her. She'd dropped her voice again after, but this woman still saw a little girl and it was scary to her. "Um, I'm a boy." She stated bluntly, giving the woman a deadpan look. The waitress wouldn't have noticed, but there was a tension in the child's shoulders as told the lie. The woman looked appropriately flustered and apologizing before excusing herself.

The would-be boy glanced across the table, a little wariness in her blue-green eyes as if she were waiting for him to call her out.

Shit. How was he supposed to explain that he'd stolen Finn as an egg from a rival back in Alola, without outing himself as a career criminal to the kid? Sure, Scrap didn't seem like someone who would run right to the cops (especially not over a stolen Pokemon), but that still wasn't something worth broadcasting. "I acquired him from an acquaintance back in my home region," he finally settled on saying, hoping it was just the right amout of vague and specific. Hopefully this kid knew better than to ask too many questions. "And yeah, exactly. glad you agree with me, kid."

At the look the girl gave after he ordered a milkshake, Carlton couldn't help but laugh. Someone really didn't know how to live life to the fullest, did they? But at least she could still get excited about things - that was important. "I'll have to introduce you at some point. My egg too, once it hatches. Though I have no idea what's in the thing," he said, trying to keep the suggestion casual.

At Scrap's declaration that she was, in fact, a boy, he couldn't help but let out a small huff, managing to keep himself from asking any questions until after the waitress had left. Whatever this girl's motive was, it certainly wasn't for him to ruin it. "A boy, huh?" he asked, raising an eyebrow and leaning in closer. "Does that usually work for you, kid?"
